Scientists use AI to predict biological age based on smartphone and wearables data

Many physiological parameters demonstrate tight correlations with age. Various biomarkers of age, such as DNA methylation, gene expression or circulating blood factor levels could be used to build accurate «biological clocks» to obtain individual biological age and the rate of aging estimations. Yet large-scale biochemical or genomic profiling is still logistically difficult and expensive for any practical applications beyond academic research.

The investment is part of an AI strategy laid out by President Emmanuel Macron at the elite College de France research institute in Paris, the French presidency said. The goal is to make better use of the French higher education system that trains computer engineers and mathematicians only to see them leave for jobs at top US tech companies. Some of them have secured high-level positions at Alphabet, the parent company of search engine Google, and Facebook, which opened an AI research centre in Paris in 2015.

Experts in Russia designed a free app dubbed Gero, which uses AI to analyse activity data from your phone accelerometer to estimate your lifespan within a tenth of a year. When combined with information recorded by wearable fitness monitors, this prediction becomes even more precise. The estimate will even be revised downwards if you don't keep up with your healthy living routines, hopefully adding an incentive to stick to them. ABB on the hunt for acquisitions in artificial intelligence
ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss engineering company ABB (ABBN.S) is considering acquisitions to increase its capabilities in artificial intelligence, Chief Executive Ulrich Spiesshofer said on Thursday. "We will continually further expand the portfolio of ABB," he said, speaking on the sidelines of the company's annual general meeting in Zurich. This would include investment in organic growth in artificial intelligence (AI), and partnerships with other companies to accelerate areas such as linking AI to industrial robots. ABB, whose products also include charging stations for electric cars and massive converters for continent-spanning transmission systems, would also invest selectively in start-up companies, Spiesshofer said. He was speaking after ABB gave a slightly more upbeat assessment about the development of its markets for 2018, saying conditions had brightened.

In order to do that, we're going to leverage a dataset of the Fifa 2018 video game. My goal is to show you how to create a predictive model that is able to forecast how good a soccer player is based on their game statistics (using Python in a Jupyter Notebook).
