360{\deg} Stance Detection

The proliferation of fake news and filter bubbles makes it increasingly difficult to form an unbiased, balanced opinion towards a topic. To ameliorate this, we propose 360{\deg} Stance Detection, a tool that aggregates news with multiple perspectives on a topic. It presents them on a spectrum ranging from support to opposition, enabling the user to base their opinion on multiple pieces of diverse evidence.


Hyperspherical Variational Auto-Encoders

The Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) is one of the most used unsupervised machine learning models. But although the default choice of a Gaussian distribution for both the prior and posterior represents a mathematically convenient distribution often leading to competitive results, we show that this parameterization fails to model data with a latent hyperspherical structure. To address this issue we propose using a von Mises-Fisher (vMF) distribution instead, leading to a hyperspherical latent space. Through a series of experiments we show how such a hyperspherical VAE, or $\mathcal{S}$-VAE, is more suitable for capturing data with a hyperspherical latent structure, while outperforming a normal, $\mathcal{N}$-VAE, in low dimensions on other data types.


Adaptive distributed methods under communication constraints

In this paper we take up the study of the fundamental possibilities and limitations of distributed methods for high-dimensional, or nonparametric problems. The design and study of such methods has attracted substantial attention recently. This is for a large part motivated by the ever increasing size of datasets, leading to the necessity to analyze data while distributed over multiple machines and/or cores. Other reasons to consider distributed methods include privacy considerations or the simple fact that in some situations data are physically collected at multiple locations. By now a variety of methods are available for estimating nonparametric or highdimensional models to data in a distributed manner.


UK-led space junk mission sent into orbit

A UK-led experiment to tackle space junk has been sent into orbit. It takes the form of a small satellite that will practise techniques for tracking debris and capturing it. The RemoveDebris system is heading to the International Space Station where astronauts are expected to set the experiment running in late May. Space junk is an ever-growing problem with more than 7,500 tonnes of redundant hardware now thought to be circling the Earth. Ranging from old rocket bodies and defunct spacecraft through to screws and even flecks of paint - this material poses a collision hazard to operational missions.

Fewer people's jobs are likely to be destroyed by artificial intelligence and robots than has been suggested by a much-cited study, an OECD report says. An influential 2013 forecast by Oxford University said that about 47% of jobs in the US in 2010 and 35% in the UK were at "high risk" of being automated over the following 20 years. But the OECD puts the US figure at about 10% and the UK's at 12%. Even so, it says many more workers face their tasks significantly changing. The OECD says the previous forecasts exaggerated the impact of automation because they had relied on a broad grouping together of jobs with the same title. Its new analysis, by contrast, takes account of the differences between jobs with the same name.


Robot heads for North Sea oil rigs in 'world first' scheme

An autonomous robot will be deployed to an offshore oil and gas platform in the North Sea later this year, in a first for the sector. The ยฃ4m project's backers said the move was designed to take humans out of dangerous and dull jobs, and reinvent oil and gas as an industry of the future. Under the pilot scheme, the robot will initially be deployed at the French oil firm Total's gas plant on Shetland before being sent to join the 120 workers on the company's Alwyn platform, 440km north-east of Aberdeen. The machine, made by Austrian firm Taurob and supported on the software side by German university TU Darmstadt, will be used for visual inspections and detecting gas leaks. Rebecca Allison, asset integrity solution centre manager at the publicly-funded Oil and Gas Technology Centre, insisted autonomous robots would not be used to cut the wage burden of offshore workers who are paid a premium for working in tough, remote conditions.

New Jersey Man Shot Dead After Torture Over PlayStation, Suspect Arrested

Authorities in New Jersey arrested a man accused of kidnapping and murdering a 20-year-old trying to buy a PlayStation video game console advertised online, reports said Saturday. Rufus Thompson, 29, was arrested Saturday morning in Trenton and was charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, kidnapping and weapons offenses in the death of Danny Diaz-Delgado. The victim's body was discovered March 24 near the banks of Assunpink Creek in Hamilton Township, the Trentonian reported. Investigators said Diaz-Delgado had been shot at least seven times, with wounds in his head, torso and one leg. His hands were tied behind his back and tape was wrapped around his face.
