Element AI global talent report finds Canada has third-largest concentration of AI researchers
Montreal-based Element AI has compiled a report and analysis on the global supply of AI researchers in an effort to get a better understanding of an industry in high demand. Overall, the report found that there are 22,064 PhD-educated researchers globally that are capable of working in AI research and applications, with only 3,074 candidates currently looking for work. The US had the highest concentration of researchers with 9,010 researchers, followed by the UK with 1,861 researchers. Canada fell in third place with 1,154 researchers. To conduct the broader survey, Element AI used results from LinkedIn searches that showed the total number of profiles according to specialized parameters.

Although the interest for leveraging artificial intelligence in business is high, implementation is still low and as far as artificial intelligence in business is concerned we're about to see a growth in'meaningful' artificial intelligence deployments, Gartner said in February 2018. Do note the term meaningful. Gartner states that according to its 2018 CIO Agenda Survey four percent of CIOs have implemented artificial intelligence thus far. However, 46 percent of CIOs developed plans for AI implementation. At the same time, however, ample concerns remain for CIOs.

One person unsurprised by the unfolding data scandals surrounding Cambridge Analytica and Facebook is Cathy O'Neil. In 2016 Cathy published her book Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy. In the book O'Neil reveals how a silent bureaucracy governed by algorithms and big data is emerging across every corner of society. This new bureaucracy is increasingly deciding who gets a job, who gets credit (and at what rate), who goes to prison and what information people read. Some of these systems may be making accurate decisions. However, Cathy argues that accuracy and efficiency alone are not sufficient metrics for success. Fairness, equity and other social considerations need to be built into the algorithms.
'Cow Fitbits,' artificial intelligence coming to the dairy farm
In the two months since Richard Watson strapped 200 remote-control-sized transmitters around his cows' necks, an artificial-intelligence system named Ida has pinged his phone with helpful alerts -- when his cows are chewing the cud, when they're feeling sick, when they're ready for insemination. "There may be 10 animals out there that have a real problem, but could you pick them?" he said one morning, standing among a grazing herd of dairy cattle wearing what he calls "cow Fitbits." But on the neighboring pastures here in rural Georgia, other farmers say they aren't that impressed. When a cow's in heat, they know she'll start getting mounted by her bovine sisters, so they smear paint on the cows' backsides and then just look for the incriminating smudge. "I can spot a cow across a room that don't feel great just by looking in her eyes," said Mark Rodgers, a fourth-generation dairy farmer in Dearing, Ga., whose dad still drives a tractor at 82. "The good Lord said, 'This is what you can do.' I can't draw, paint or anything else, but I can watch cows," he said.
Most Brits currently favour humans as opposed to robots in a handful of occupations
The automation of work, including the use of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), is expected to rapidly increase. In fact, recent research by think tank'Centre for Cities' found that one in five jobs in Britain will fall victim to automation by 2030. These findings are further echoed by auditing firm'PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC)', who estimate more than 10 million UK workers will be at high risk of being displaced by robots within the next 15 years. As the prevalence of automation becomes more common in our day-to-day routines (supermarket self-service tills, air travel self-check in etc.), it's threat towards human jobs only becomes more apparent. Interested in this phenomenon, Reboot Digital Marketing analysed findings from Mindshare, who surveyed more than 6,000 individuals from across the UK to see whether they would prefer robots or humans in eight different occupations/scenarios.

China has a chance to lead in AI because it has managed to adopt new technologies very quickly In the future, if not already, the Silicon Valleys of artificial intelligence (AI) will be in China. Alibaba, China's e-commerce giant, is based in Hangzhou. And Tencent, a multinational conglomerate that is investing heavily in AI, is in Shenzhen. Tencent already has a market capitalisation higher than General Electric, and Baidu is larger than General Motors. China has a chance to lead in AI because it has managed to adopt new technologies very quickly. Just as millions of consumers in India went directly from no phones to smartphones โ skipping landlines and flip phones altogether โ Chinese consumers are now doing the same, and across a wide range of new technologies.

Google employees demanded that the company end its participation in "Project Maven," a system of mass drone surveillance integrated with the US drone warfare program, declaring, "We believe that Google should not be in the business of war." It called for the adoption of a policy stating that "neither Google nor its contractors will ever build warfare technology." Google's collusion with the drone assassination program highlights the growing integration of the major technology companies with the US military, which, having declared a new era of "great-power competition" with Russia and China, sees pressing Silicon Valley into its war plans as the only way to regain its military power on the world stage. Just as ominous is Google's role in mass domestic surveillance and censorship.
