AI will augment people's capabilities but won't take all jobs. However, there will be socioeconomic upheaval, warns PwC's authority on AI, Anand Rao. Anand Rao is PwC global leader for artificial intelligence (AI) and is the consulting giant's innovation lead for the US analytics practice. Rao has 24 years of industry and consulting experience, helping senior executives to structure, solve and manage critical issues facing their organisations. He has worked extensively on business, technology and analytics issues across a wide range of industry sectors including financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, aerospace and defence, across US, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Lawmakers want you to be able to sue robots
If a robot, acting autonomously, injures or otherwise wrongs a human, who will be held responsible? Some European lawmakers think that the best way to resolve this question will be to give robots "electronic personalities," a form of legal personhood. Proposed in a 2017 report from the European Union, this form of robot rights wouldn't give them status like that of human beings -- they're not going to get married, or buy a house, or adopt a child. But it would make it possible for self-learning robots to sue and be sued, with legal status like a corporation. Proponents say that the idea is a common-sense move, one that will be necessary to create a workable legal structure as these entities become smarter and more integrated into everyday human life.
This algorithm automatically spots "face swaps" in videos
The ability to take one person's face or expression and superimpose it onto a video of another person has recently become possible. In particular, pornographic videos called "deepfakes" have emerged on websites such as Reddit and 4Chan showing famous individuals' faces superimposed onto the bodies of actors. This phenomenon has significant implications. At the very least, it has the potential to undermine the reputation of people who are victims of this kind of forgery. It poses problems for biometric ID systems.

The UK says it can't lead on AI spending, so will have to lead on AI ethics instead
As governments around the world plan for their AI-powered futures, the UK is preparing to take on a somewhat scholarly and moral mantle. In a report published today by the House of Lords, which will be used to guide future government policy, a committee recommended that the UK "forge a distinctive role for itself as a pioneer in ethical AI." Doing so would allow the UK to play to its "particular blend of national assets," write the report's authors, and guide global development in the field. These assets include leading universities, a thriving legal industry, and "world-respected institutions such as the BBC." The report suggests that the government sponsor more basic research into AI to develop its role, and convene a global summit in London next year to create a "common framework for the ethical development and deployment of artificial intelligence systems." The recommendations are ambitious but essentially pragmatic.
Robots could take millions of people's jobs causing a revival in COMMUNISM, Mark Carney warns
The Governor of the Bank of England has warned that the rise of robots in the workplace could cause a revival in Communism and 19th-century wage stagnation. Mark Carney, 53, said automation of millions of jobs would result in more support of Communist ideas within a generation. 'Marx and Engels may again become relevant' if mechanisation forces down pay and raises inequality, he warned. To alleviate the damage, Carney suggested workers should train for jobs that require higher emotional intelligence, for example in care and leisure. Speaking at the Canada Growth Summit in Toronto, Carney said there will be vast inequalities between workers who benefit from AI and those who have their job wiped out by it.
