Kai-Fu Lee is the founder and CEO of Sinovation Ventures, a Chinese technology venture investment firm. He was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world in 2013. Before founding Sinovation Ventures, he was president of Google China and previously held executive positions at Microsoft, SGI, and Apple. While in Vancouver attending the TED conference, Lee sat down with Martin Reeves, director of the BCG Henderson Institute, to talk about the impact of artificial intelligence on companies, industries, and nations. Drawing from his new book AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order -- which will be released in September 2018 -- he discussed the case for the regulation of AI applications, how AI affects company and national competitiveness, and how CEOs might be underestimating the effect of AI on the future of work. 'Super Mario 64: Ocarina of Time' is the perfect Nintendo mashup
Super Mario 64 is considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time. Its large, imaginative levels and increasingly difficult challenges have defined the 3D platformer genre since its release on the Nintendo 64. Similarly, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time -- the first in the franchise with 3D graphics -- is considered a classic with a record 99 rating on Metacritic. Both have been celebrated with portable re-releases and a deluge of fan movies, artwork and soundtrack remixes. But never have the two games been combined in a fan-made ROM hack like Super Mario 64: Ocarina of Time. The unofficial and legally dubious project allows players to traverse Hyrule, the mystical kingdom found in the Zelda series, as Nintendo's portly plumber. The world is a little different to the one found in Link's adventure, however. Hyrule Castle, for instance, is owned by Peach and patrolled by pink Bob-ombs. The Forest Temple, located in the Lost Woods, is filled with colorful Boos instead of flaming skulls.
Imperial professor appointed Research Chair in Data-Centric Engineering Imperial News Imperial College London
Professor Mark Girolami will study how engineering can use big data to improve practice, including the development of'digital twins'. Professor Girolami, from the Department of Mathematics at Imperial, has been appointed the Lloyd's Register Foundation / Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Data-Centric Engineering. He will lead a five-year project to explore how big data can be incorporated into engineering practice, including the development of new data-centric techniques to monitor the safety of physical structures that will be trialled on the world's first 3D printed stainless steel pedestrian bridge. As part of this, Professor Girolami will develop novel methods and software to create virtual copies of physical structures, also known as digital twins, in order to model what might happen in real life. He is currently Chair of Statistics at Imperial and Strategic Programme Director for the Turing-Lloyd's Register Foundation Data-Centric Engineering Programme at The Alan Turing Institute.
Bloomberg: Amazon wants to build a home robot
Bloomberg is claiming that Amazon is looking to build a home robot that would do for personal androids what the Kindle did to reading. The website's sources-in-the-know claim that the giant's hardware division, Lab126, is working on some sort of domestic droid, codenamed "Vesta." Apparently, project Vesta has been in development for some time, but this year the company began aggressively hiring roboticists. It's thought that the first tests of Vesta, in select employees' homes, will come at the end of this year. The report is little more than shadows and dust at this point, and there's little solid information to go on within.

While the public may still equate the notion of artificial intelligence in the military context with the humanoid robots of the Terminator franchise, there has been a significant growth in discussions about the national security consequences of artificial intelligence. These discussions span academia, business, and governments, from Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom's concern about the existential risk to humanity posed by artificial intelligence to Telsa founder Elon Musk's concern that artificial intelligence could trigger World War III to Vladimir Putin's statement that leadership in AI will be essential to global power in the 21st century. What does this really mean, especially when you move beyond the rhetoric of revolutionary change and think about the real world consequences of potential applications of artificial intelligence to militaries? Robots will outnumber humans by 2048 with droid population set to reach 9.4billion
The vision of robots taking over the world might sound like something out of a dystopian science fiction novel. But robots will outnumber humans by 2048, an expert has predicted today. According to'leading futurologist' Dr Ian Pearson, earth's robot population will grow from around 57 million to 9.4billion over the next 30 years. Dr Pearson, a British novelist, engineer and inventor, said robots could also become'emotionally intelligent' by 2028. He said his predictions are based on the'modest' assumption that the number of robots will grow by a fifth each year.
