Britain pumps cash into artificial intelligence before Brexit

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain announced on Thursday a 1 billion pound ($1.4 billion) joint investment in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry to capitalize on what the government sees as a competitive advantage in the sector as it prepares for life after Brexit. The deal is the latest in a series of targeted public-private investment pacts in the government's industrial strategy that aims to modernize Britain's economy and address decades of regional and industrial decline. "It's evident that Britain is a place that people want to come to for AI," business minister Greg Clark told Reuters during a visit to a facility in London that nurtures early-stage tech businesses from across the world. "We have a position of strength that we want to capitalize on because if we don't build on it the other countries around the world would steal a march." Governments worldwide are plowing cash AI to keep up with international rivals and seeking to harness its power to transform industries from transport to agriculture.

ACR and MICCAI to Leverage AI Algorithms to Meet Clinical Needs in Radiology

The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assistance Intervention (MICCAI) Society recently announced that they are working together to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to better meet the clinical needs of radiologists. "The ACR brings a strong clinical perspective, decades of experience creating imaging standards, and a history of promoting imaging informatics solutions, such as DICOM, that help the imaging technology landscape evolve and thrive," said Mike Tilkin, Chief Information Officer and Executive Vice President, American College of Radiology. "Although it's still early, we believe AI algorithms will be useful in a variety of areas throughout the imaging life-cycle and will help radiologists be more efficient and provide better patient care. Radiology has played a leading role in the application of advanced technology in medicine, and we believe AI represents another important area of innovation and opportunity." The ACR is actively creating use cases for imaging AI and will be working with MICCAI under this memorandum of understanding to leverage this knowledge base in MICCAI's imaging AI competitions.

There are a lot of articles about how to use Python for solving Machine Learning problems, with this article I start series of materials on how to use modern C for solving same problems and which libraries can be used. I assume that readers are already familiar with Machine Learning concepts and will concentrate on programming issues only. The first part is about creating Polynomial Regression model with XTensor library. This is C library for numerical analysis with multi-dimensional array expressions, and containers of XTensor are inspired by NumPy. A lot of functions in this library also have semantic similar to NumPy.so should be easier to start with this library rather then with Eigen or ViennaCL if you already familiar with NumPy.

It's a rather curious name choice, in that you can't go grab the update manually until the very last day of April. And most won't see the update until it starts otherwise rolling out on May 8 Microsoft says this latest iteration of Windows is still about helping you create stuff, only doing so in ways that better maximize your time.


Cambridge receives £10 million in funding for new AI supercomputer

The new AI supercomputer is a £10 million partnership between the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and the University. Capable of solving the largest scientific and industrial challenges at very high speeds, the supercomputer is supported by Cambridge's Research Computing Service. The aim is to help companies to create real business value from advanced computing infrastructures. The supercomputer is part of the UK government's AI Sector Deal, which involves more than 50 leading technology companies and organisations. The deal is worth almost £1 billion, including almost £300 million of private sector investment into AI.

Tech sector backs British AI industry with multi million pound investment

More than 50 leading businesses and organisations have contributed to the development of a £1 billion deal to put the nation at the forefront of the artificial intelligence industry, featuring almost £300 million of new private sector investment. The deal between government and industry, announced by Business Secretary Greg Clark and Digital Secretary Matt Hancock today (Thursday 26 April 2018), also includes more than £300 million of newly allocated government funding for AI research to make the UK a global leader in this technology. Building on the commitment made in the government's modern Industrial Strategy and its AI Grand Challenge, the deal marks the first phase of a major innovation-focused investment drive in AI which aims to help the UK seize the £232 billion opportunity AI offers the UK economy by 2030 (10% of GDP).
