Google Is Latest 'Big Three' Cloud Provider to Offer V100 GPUs
Google announced today that Nvidia Tesla V100 GPUs are now available in public beta on its Google Cloud Platform (GCP), accessible through its infrastructure-as-a-service offering Compute Engine and on Kubernetes Engine, its managed environment for deploying containerized applications. The cloud giant also announced general availability of Nvidia's previous-generation P100 parts, in public beta on Google's platform since September 2017. The Tesla V100 is Nvidia's highest-end datacenter GPU, aimed at high-performance computing and machine learning workloads. The first product based on the Volta architecture, unveiled by Nvidia in May 2017, the Tesla V100 for NVLink offers 125 teraflops of mixed-precision floating point, 15.7 teraflops of single-precision floating point, and 7.8 teraflops of double-precision floating point performance. The NVLink 2.0 interconnect provides up to 300GB/s of GPU-to-GPU bandwidth, nearly 10x the data throughput offered by traditional PCIe, boosting performance on deep learning and HPC workloads by up to 40 percent, according to Nvidia.

Artificial intelligence spots gravitational waves – Physics World
A deep-learning system that can sift gravitational wave signals from background noise has been created by physicists in the UK. Deep learning is a neural-inspired pattern recognition technique that has already been applied to image processing, speech recognition and medical diagnoses, among other things. Chris Messenger and colleagues at the University of Glasgow have shown that their system is as effective as conventional signal processing and has the potential to identify gravitational-wave signals much more quickly. Gravitational waves are ripples in space-time that can be observed using the LIGO-Virgo detectors – which are laser interferometers with pairs of arms several kilometres long positioned at right angles to each other. As a wave passes through the Earth it very slightly stretches one arm while squeezing the other, before squeezing the first and stretching the second, and so on.

We would like the session here to take place by 24 May.

Kantar - 83% of UK believe smart AI will eventually replace humans at work
Artificial intelligence (AI), robots, automation and machine learning are concepts that are appearing more frequently in mainstream media as the technology behind them is constantly improved. But do people in the UK see these making a real difference to how they live their lives? According to a survey this week by Lightspeed, 83% of UK adults believe that AI will one day be smart enough to take over from humans in many types of job, with 27% of respondents claiming this day will come'in my lifetime.' Will machines take over from real people in manufacturing and industry? With Brexit (and a drop in the cost of robots), it's hardly surprising that so many people see this scenario on the horizon.
Lumos bike helmet adds Apple Watch gestures to control turn signals
It's been almost three years since we first came across the Lumos smart cycling helmet, which got our attention with its cunning automatic brake lights and wirelessly-controlled turn signal indicators. The helmet has since been shipping as of late 2016, but the Hong Kong startup didn't stop there. Today -- which happens to be the first day of Bike Month -- Lumos is releasing an update that adds gesture control for the helmet's blinkers via Apple Watch, along with Apple HealthKit integration for automatic cycling tracking. To enable gesture control, the user simply has to install the iOS and watchOS apps, pair the iPhone with the helmet over Bluetooth, calibrate the watch with your left- and right-turn gestures using your watch-wielding hand, then you're good to go. The turn indicators will continue to blink until you shake your hand.
French Government Proposed A New Drone Law – DEEP AERO DRONES – Medium
The French Government has designed a new law making it compulsory for the drones to be fitted with signalling lights. The proposal would mandate the installation of beacons on all unmanned aircraft. The proposed beacon would run on unlicensed spectrum allocation and the signalling message takes place in the payload part of Wi-fi frame including- the code for drone's manufacturer, drone's serial number, its latitude, longitude and altitude, its speed and timestamp. The light to be used must not contain the colours used for manned aviation, i.e. red, white, or green. The proposal especially signifies that a single beacon will be acceptable for a swarm of drones.
Russia uses armed ROBOT during gun battle that left 11 jihadists dead
Russia operatives used an armed robot in a gunfight that left 11 jihadists dead - as they try to stamp out extremism ahead of the World Cup. Counter-terrorism forces engaged extremists in the volatile Islamic region of Dagestan over several days. Dramatic footage shows police marksman firing on a house from an armored vehicle. A compact armed robot is seen approaching the property to engage the jihadists. The bullet-ridden bodies of six men were later shown in pictures released by investigative authorities.
