While we often think of maps in terms of information that already exists in the spatial domain, such as building addresses or GPS coordinates, the written word contains a tremendous volume of locative insights. What happens when we combine fulltext geocoding with the power of the cloud to analyze hundreds of billions of words of global news coverage to map the hidden geography of the language of news? Language is inextricably interconnected with geography. Each day as we consume the stream of information available about the world around us, we are inundated with mentions of location. The news media in particular is saturated with locative references, anchoring our understanding of the world in space.

Ocado's fulfilment center in Andover has hundreds of robots working above a grid of groceries. In the race to stay alive in grocery retailing, Whole Foods sold to Amazon, Walmart offered grocery delivery and now Kroger has announced it will build three huge, automated warehouses filled with swarming robots to process online orders. The only problem: By the time Kroger gets those warehouses, which could rise to 20 in the coming years, it may still struggle to match Amazon in doing speedy delivery. The reason comes down to geography and the nitty-gritty details of Kroger's logistical overhaul. Kroger has picked warehouse builder Ocado, well known in the U.K. for being one of the first companies in the world to sell fresh food online when it first launched in 2000.

Our technique is consistent and achieves high accuracy relative to an MRI scan -- the current gold standard technique for diagnosis. This could lead to better treatments and care for patients in everyday practice."

New developments in genomics, digital medicine, artificial intelligence and robotics have already revolutionised some NHS treatments such as eye surgery and knee replacements. Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt has called on US academic Eric Topol to carry out a review into how the NHS can pioneer new treatments and technologies to transform healthcare. Dr Topol, an expert in cardiology, genetics and digital medicine, has previously examined the use of wireless and smartphone technology in healthcare, and led a multi-million dollar US research programme focusing on harnessing technology and data to provide more precise, tailored patient treatment.
