Samsung opens huge AI centre in the UK
Korean technology giant Samsung has announced the opening of a huge new AI research in Cambridge, UK to capitalise on local talent. Cambridge has gained international recognition as a hub of AI talent. Google's acquisition of DeepMind, whose headquarters is based in the city, only helped to further boost this reputation. "Today's announcement by Samsung will create high-paying, high-skilled jobs and our modern Industrial Strategy will encourage further investment like this all around the country," says Prime Minister Theresa May. "It is a vote of confidence in the UK as a world leader in artificial intelligence, and the new AI research centre will benefit from the world-renowned talent and academic prowess of Cambridge."

Deep-pocketed Korean conglomerate Samsung today announced it will open a massive AI research center, based in leafy (and deeply tech-centric) Cambridge. The Samsung AI Center, Cambridge (SAIC-Cambridge) will be lead by Professor Andrew Blake, who is one of Britain's leading academics in the AI space. Are you doing business in Amsterdam in May? Blake previously headed up Microsoft Research's Cambridge laboratory, and is a former director of the Alan Turing Institute. The new facility is the fifth owned by Samsung outside of Korea and the US, and is a major coup for the British tech scene, particularly as it tries to position itself as a world leader in artificial intelligence. The UK already has a solid pedigree in AI.
Amazon is selling facial recognition tech to law enforcement
If you're nervous about the privacy implications of Amazon's camera technology, there might be a good reason for it. The ACLU and a coalition of civil rights groups are calling on Amazon chief Jeff Bezos to stop offering Rekognition facial detection system to government customers after learning that the company is actively helping law enforcement implement the potentially invasive technology. Police in multiple regions have partnered with Amazon on surveillance projects, including an Orlando proof-of-concept that lets Amazon search for "people of interest" through city cameras as well a Washington County, Oregon initiative that lets officers scan people to see if they turn up in a mugshot database. The ACLU also learned that Amazon provided Washington County a roadmap under a non-disclosure agreement, and offered to link the county to other government customers interested in Rekognition, such as a body camera manufacturer. That's particularly problematic when facial recognition on body cameras is illegal in Oregon.

The British glove manufacturer Cornelia James is often in the public eye. Since 1979, it has provided gloves by royal appointment to the Queen of England, and more recently it has dressed megastars including Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Madonna. All those high-profile customers are great for publicity, but nobody drives sales quite like Kate Middleton, said Genevieve James, the company's creative director. "We get far more of a spike in sales when someone like Kate wears them. But when it's somebody like the Duchess of Cambridge, the public, particularly in the US, can relate to that," James told IBM. James first confirmed that fact in 2012 when, at a ceremony for Remembrance Sunday, Middleton wore a pair of Cornelia James' merino wool gloves.
Experts disclose new details about 300-year-old shipwreck
A Spanish galleon laden with treasures worth £12.6 billion ($17 billion) that sank to the bottom of the Caribbean 300 years ago was found using an autonomous robot, researchers have revealed. The San Jose, sunk by the Royal Navy, gained a reputation as the'holy grail' of shipwrecks and was carrying one of the most valuable hauls of treasure ever lost at sea. The 62-gun, three-masted galleon, went down on June 8, 1708, with 600 people on board as well as a treasure of gold, silver and emeralds during a battle with British ships in the War of Spanish Succession. The San Jose was located by an underwater autonomous vehicle operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) back in 2015. The institution said it was keeping its involvement in the discovery quiet out of respect for the Colombian government.
