Fixing Britain's stuttering Brexit programme or promising that artificial intelligence (AI) will help make a huge breakthrough in tackling cancer? Such is the malaise that afflicts Britain's pledge to leave the European Union that Prime Minister Theresa May appears to have chosen the latter option. This could, however, become a reality much sooner than many people think. "My ambition is that within 15 years we'll diagnose cancer much earlier in at least 50,000 more people a year," Mrs May said on Monday, citing AI as the reason. She said early diagnosis of people at an early stage of prostate, ovarian, lung and bowel cancer would lead to around 22,000 fewer people in the UK dying each year by 2033.

One of the country's biggest hospitals has unveiled sweeping plans to use artificial intelligence to carry out tasks traditionally performed by doctors and nurses, from diagnosing cancer on CT scans to deciding which A&E patients are seen first. The three-year partnership between University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and the Alan Turing Institute aims to bring the benefits of the machine learning revolution to the NHS on an unprecedented scale. Prof Bryan Williams, director of research at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said that the move could have a major impact on patient outcomes, drawing parallels with the transformation of the consumer experience by companies such as Amazon and Google. "It's going to be a game-changer," he said. "You can go on your phone and book an airline ticket, decide what movies you're going to watch or order a pizza โ€ฆ it's all about AI," he said.

Mark Zuckerberg was warned that he risks being remembered as "a genius who created a digital monster", by a senior member of the European Parliament, where the Facebook founder and chief executive was answering questions on a massive data leak affecting millions of users. Guy Verhofstadt said that the only way for scandals surrounding the social media giant to subside, would be for its services to be split apart. "I really think we have a big problem here and it won't be fixed by saying we will fix itself," the parliament's chief Brexit negotiator said. "Could you and would you cooperate with European Antitrust authorities?" The Belgian MEP went on to suggest that Facebook's dominance could be stifled by splitting it from Facebook messenger.

BRUSSELS - Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg arrived to meet European Union lawmakers on Tuesday ready to apologize for a massive data leak, in his latest attempt to draw a line under a scandal that has rocked the world's biggest social media network. Zuckerberg agreed to meet leaders of the European Parliament to answer questions about how political consultancy Cambridge Analytica improperly got hold of the personal data of 87 million Facebook users, including up to 2.7 million in the EU. According to pre-released remarks, Zuckerberg will say it has become clear "over the last couple of years that we haven't done enough to prevent the tools we've built from being used for harm as well." "Whether it's fake news, foreign interference in elections or developers misusing people's information, we didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibilities. That was a mistake, and I'm sorry." His comments echo an apology last month to U.S. lawmakers, but questions remain over how Facebook let the leak happen and whether it is doing enough to prevent a recurrence.

The news that Theresa May has urged the NHS and technology companies to adopt artificial intelligence techniques in order to diagnose diseases such as cancer is extremely positive for both the healthcare community and for patients (May to promise millions for AI tools to help fight cancer, 21 May). But to usher in an age of AI, there are several obstacles that must first be overcome. Beyond the prime minister encouraging greater adoption, increased investment into how AI can safely and successfully augment healthcare and research is needed. Far greater collaboration across different disciplines and geographies is also needed to fully realise AI's potential. It's important to remember that while AI has great promise, it's not simply a case of "plug and play".

In a field of sugar beet in Switzerland, a solar-powered robot that looks like a table on wheels scans the rows of crops with its camera, identifies weeds and zaps them with jets of blue liquid from its mechanical tentacles. Undergoing final tests before the liquid is replaced with weedkiller, the Swiss robot is one of new breed of AI weeders that investors say could disrupt the $100billion pesticides and seeds industry by reducing the need for universal herbicides and the genetically modified (GM) crops that tolerate them. Dominated by companies such as Bayer, DowDuPont, BASF and Syngenta, the industry is bracing for the impact of digital agricultural technology and some firms are already adapting their business models. Herbicide sales are worth $26billion a year and account for 46 percent of pesticides revenue overall while 90 percent of GM seeds have some herbicide tolerance built in, according to market researcher Phillips McDougall. 'Some of the profit pools that are now in the hands of the big agrochemical companies will shift, partly to the farmer and partly to the equipment manufacturers,' said Cedric Lecamp, who runs the $1billion Pictet-Nutrition fund that invests in companies along the food supply chain.


This UK startup thinks it can win the self-driving car race with better machine learning

A new U.K. self-driving car startup founded by Amar Shah and Alex Kendall, two machine learning PhDs from University of Cambridge, is de-cloaking today. Wayve -- backed by New York-based Compound, Europe's Fly Ventures, and Brent Hoberman's Firstminute Capital -- is building what it describes as "end-to-end machine learning algorithms" to make autonomous vehicles a reality, an approach it claims is different to much of the conventional thinking on self-driving cars. Specifically, as Wayve CEO Shah explained in a call last week, the young company believes that the key to making an autonomous vehicle that is truly just that (i.e. In other words, self-driving cars is an AI problem first and foremost, and one that he and co-founder Kendall argue requires a very specific machine-learning development skill set. "Wayve is building intelligent software to decide how to control a vehicle on all public roads," he tells me.
