Drone rules made law to reduce threat to aircraft

The government has announced measures to tackle the dangers drones can pose to people, aircraft and airports. From 30 July, drones will be banned by law from flying above 400ft and within 1km of an airport boundary, because of fears they could damage the windows or engines of planes and other aircraft during takeoff or landing. From 30 November, pilots of drones that weigh 250g or more will have to register with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and will be required to pass a safety test online. The restrictions were previously included in the CAA's drone code and will now become law as an amendment to the Air Navigation Order, as a stopgap before a drones bill is passed. The number of near-misses between drones and aircraft has risen year on year, from six in 2014 to 93 in 2017, and the government has previously said new laws were needed to ensure drones were used safely and responsibly.

Deep learning has been at the forefront of the so called AI revolution for quite a few years now, and many people had believed that it is the silver bullet that will take us to the world of wonders of technological singularity (general AI). Many bets were made in 2014, 2015 and 2016 when still new boundaries were pushed, such as the Alpha Go etc. Companies such as Tesla were announcing through the mouths of their CEO's that fully self driving car was very close, to the point that Tesla even started selling that option to customers [to be enabled by future software update]. We have now mid 2018 and things have changed. Not on the surface yet, NIPS conference is still oversold, the corporate PR still has AI all over its press releases, Elon Musk still keeps promising self driving cars and Google CEO keeps repeating Andrew Ng's slogan that AI is bigger than electricity. But this narrative begins to crack.

Is CNN better then dermatologists at detecting malignant melanomas? No, not CNN, the cable news network, but convolutional neural network (CNN), which is a type of AI or artificial intelligence. To answer this question, a team of researchers from the University of Heidelberg, the University of Gรถttingen, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center pitted dermatologist versus computer in a study published in the journal the Annals of Oncology. In one corner were 58 dermatologists from 17 countries. Seventeen (29.3%) described themselves as'beginners' (with less than 2 years of experience), 11 (19%) as'skilled' (2โ€“5 years of experience) and 30 (51.7%) as'expert' (greater than 5 years of experience) in dermoscopy, which is using a magnifying device to examine skin lesions.

A UK government scheme is trying to clip the wings of drones across Britain. New legislation will see the introduction of a drone database, restrictions on drone size and an online test for prospective pilots. The new rules will also ban drones from flying above 400 feet (122 metres), and within one kilometre (0.6 miles) of airport boundaries. These restrictions come on the back of a recent surge in'near-misses' between aircraft and drones as the amount of incidents has gone from six events in 2014 to 93 last year. New legislation, passed by the House of Commons, will see the introduction of a drone database, restrictions on drone size and an online test for prospective pilots.

Developer of hit video game Fortnite sued for alleged copyright infringement

According to the Korean Times, a lawsuit has been filed by PUGB Corp, a subsidiary of the publisher Bluehole. It alleges that Fortnite bears many similarities to its own title, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which was launched several months earlier. PUBG claims an injunction was filed on Friday with the Seoul central district court against Epic Games Korea, the local office of Epic Games, a game publisher and developer based in Cary, North Carolina. Fortnite was originally released last July as a co-operative zombie-shooting game. However, after the success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, in which 100 players fight each other across a shrinking environment to be the last person standing, Epic Games released a new version of its game entitled Fortnite: Battle Royale, which features the same premise.


DCU teams up with AIB to appoint Ireland's first chair in data analytics

Dublin City University has teamed up with AIB to appoint the Ireland's first chair in data analytics, with Professor Tomas Ward taking up the role. Based in DCU's School of Computing, Prof Ward's research will focus on how data analytics can support decision making in business, and give insight into customer behaviour. "One area I will be exploring is how consumer attitudes to risk taking inform financial decision making," Prof Ward said. "I am also interested in investigating how we can improve decision making in industries from banking to healthcare by making the results of advanced machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence more understandable to the employees who make decisions based on these insights." Prof Ward is joining DCU from Maynooth University.
