Uh oh! Here's yet more AI that creates creepy fake talking heads
Experts have raised ethical issues surrounding this technology before. The Malicious AI report focused on fake videos to make people believe false information, and could jeopardize political security. The paper doesn't address these concerns too much. But it did say that pushing the limits of this technology and democratising "calls for additional care in ensuring verifiable video authenticity, e.g., through invisible watermarking." Justus Theis, a coauthor of the paper and a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Munich, in Germany, told The Register that he recognized the potential dangers of using AI to manipulate fake videos.
Announcing the 2018 AI Fellows
The Open Philanthropy Project is proud to announce our first class of AI Fellows – seven very promising machine learning researchers to whom we're collectively recommending a total of about $1.1 million in PhD fellowship support over the next five years. These fellows were selected from more than 180 applicants for their academic excellence, technical knowledge, careful reasoning, and interest in making the long-term, large-scale impacts of AI a central focus of their research. We believe that progress in artificial intelligence may eventually lead to changes in human civilization that are as large as the agricultural or industrial revolutions; while we think it's most likely that this would lead to significant improvements in human well-being, we also see significant risks. The AI Fellows have a broad mandate to think through which kinds of AI and ML research are likely to be most valuable, to share ideas and form a community with like-minded students and professors, and ultimately to act in the way that they think is most likely to improve outcomes from progress in AI. The Race to Send Robots to Mine the Ocean Floor
When the 300-foot Maersk Launcher docked in San Diego early Monday morning, it unloaded a cargo of hardened black blobs scooped from the bottom of the sea. The blobs are not rocks, but naturally-occurring metallic nodules that could one day yield metal deposits of cobalt, manganese, and nickel--not to mention scarce rare earth minerals. As worldwide demand rises for electric vehicle batteries and wind turbines, along with next generation technologies and weapon systems, demand for these metals has taken off. And the seabed is a prime target for those mining operations. Of course, it's no small feat to bring these potato-sized nodules from the bottom of the remote Pacific Ocean, and then sail them to a processing plant where the metals can be extracted.

However, probably its biggest feature isn't really a feature at all, but a new focus on performance that should speed up iPhones, even on much older handsets. The belief that robots, automation, and AI simply displace jobs and make humans irrelevant is not borne out in Asia, reports Chris Middleton. However, there are lessons to learn from the technologies' impact – in Asia and the rest of the world. Robots and automation are creating more jobs in Asia than they destroy, according to a new report from the Asia Development Bank (ADB). ADB analysis of a dozen Asian economies between 2005 and 2015 found that rising demand more than compensated for jobs lost to automation. The adoption of robotics and other connected systems stimulated higher productivity and economic growth, creating 134 million new jobs, compared with the 101 million lost to new technologies.

Viewed as a vital capability for industries that have rich data, many companies still lack the experience and expertise to extract the intelligence that can improve consumers' experience. "If data is the oil that powers the digital economy, artificial intelligence is the refinery," said Ajay Bhalla, chief security solutions officer at Mastercard.
A hospital in London wants to replace doctors with AI to cut A&E waiting times
The Royal College Hospital London (UCLH) plans to use artificial intelligence to support clinical decision-making, replacing doctors and nurses in certain situations. The hospital will work alongside The Alan Turing Institute, a government-funded data science research hub, to look at ways to make NHS services quicker, safer and more efficient, announcing a three-year partnership. One area they will focus on is A&E, which is seen as a barometer of how the rest of the hospital and the wider system is working. It is hoped the technology can help the hospital achieve the national average waiting times of four hours, which it is currently not meeting. "Imagine a scenario where patients present to A&E with abdominal pain. Our standard response is to check bloods, order X-rays or scans and in probably about 80% of cases, discharge for home management," said Professor Marcel Levi, UCLH chief executive.

The so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), which we are living through the early stages of, will fully embed existing and future digital technologies in society. As with earlier such shifts, the last of which was the ongoing'Digital Revolution' that began in the 1980s, there are positives and negatives. Two troubling aspects are the rise of decision-making by artificial intelligence (AI)-powered algorithms, and automation in the workplace by robots and AI. 'Traditional' algorithms – formal descriptions of how people or computers should perform tasks – have been in widespread use for years. Universities, for example, use'degree algorithms' to calculate final degree classifications from students' assessed work. But AI-algorithms are created by feeding a computer program huge amounts of data and'teaching' it how to behave.
