We caught up with the founder and CEO of KOMPAS, Tom Charman, to discuss how his company is using AI to improve how we explore and experience our cities. One of the most powerful uses of AI lies in its ability to uncover new insights, revealing to us what was previously invisible. Amidst the 2.5 quintillion bytes of data we create every single day, there are plenty of these insights waiting to be uncovered. Machine learning algorithms are central to this approach, as they can identify patterns in data to understand people's behaviors and preferences. Moreover, they incorporate feedback to increase their accuracy over time as more data becomes available.

How AI is Evolving the Fight Against Cancer
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been hailed to be the next saviour of the NHS, with new robotic overlords saving thousands of lives from cancer-related deaths over the next 15 years. AI has suddenly become panacea, solving everything from self-driving cars to detecting fake news - but what changed so fast? On one hand, not much: most of the hype that people are selling as "AI" was only a few years ago termed "machine learning", a change in part due to a previous desire to distance humans from something that was indistinguishable from one. On the other hand, a few specific advancements have aligned, computational power has increased and data is being generated at an unfathomable rate, with more created in the 2017 than in the history of mankind. In other words, it isn't the ideas or the technologies that are new, but rather the opportunities.
Amazon unveils the Fire TV Cube, a nearly hands-free streaming TV device
NEW YORK โ Alexa for couch potatoes is coming: Amazon's new streaming TV device will let users shout out when they want to turn on the TV, flip channels or search for sitcoms -- all without pushing any buttons. The Fire TV Cube is not entirely hands-free yet, however. Some apps or streaming services may require viewers to pick up the included remote to rewind or stop a show. Inc. says it's working with those services to integrate voice commands. Amazon's other voice-controlled Fire TV devices require a push of the remote's mic button or a separate Echo device with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant.

In this thesis we study a perception problem in the context of autonomous driving. Specifically, we study the computer vision problem of 3D object detection, in which objects should be detected from various sensor data and their position in the 3D world should be estimated. We also study the application of Generative Adversarial Networks in domain adaptation techniques, aiming to improve the 3D object detection model's ability to transfer between different domains. The state-of-the-art Frustum-PointNet architecture for LiDAR-based 3D object detection was implemented and found to closely match its reported performance when trained and evaluated on the KITTI dataset. The architecture was also found to transfer reasonably well from the synthetic SYN dataset to KITTI, and is thus believed to be usable in a semi-automatic 3D bounding box annotation process.
Forgotten corner of Europe brought back to life thanks to artificial intelligence
A lost world in a former empire in Europe has been brought to life thanks to University of Bristol researchers who used artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to analyse 47,000 multilingual pages from newspapers dating back to 1873. The study, published in Historical Methods, aimed to discover whether historical changes could be detected from the collective content of local newspapers from the Princely County of Gorizia and Gradisca. The findings reveal a series of political and cultural events which took place in a forgotten corner of the Austrian Empire that is now divided between Italy and Slovenia, some of which were unknown, until now. The images were then converted to text. The patterns that emerged from the automated analysis of 47,000 pages revealed the individual stories of thousands of people, but also the collective trends of a population in the years leading up to WW1 and the final years of that Empire.
Researchers use Artificial Intelligence to Identify, Count, Describe Wild Animals
A new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) reports how a cutting-edge artificial intelligence technique called deep learning can automatically identify, count and describe animals in their natural habitats. Photographs that are automatically collected by motion-sensor cameras can then be automatically described by deep neural networks. The result is a system that can automate animal identification for up to 99.3 percent of images while still performing at the same 96.6 percent accuracy rate of crowdsourced teams of human volunteers. "This technology lets us accurately, unobtrusively and inexpensively collect wildlife data, which could help catalyze the transformation of many fields of ecology, wildlife biology, zoology, conservation biology and animal behavior into'big data' sciences. This will dramatically improve our ability to both study and conserve wildlife and precious ecosystems," says Jeff Clune, the senior author of the paper.
Our Achievements Post ICO and Daneel's Marketing Direction
Over the past few weeks Daneel's community has expressed concern over our current marketing strategy. Since the ICO we have focused almost entirely on product development, as creating a great product is our primary goal. It has been 80 days since Daneel's ICO, and we now have a more precise vision on the release date of the product and are beginning to refocus efforts on marketing and adoption.
