Artificial Intelligence will kill. Deal with it.
Google, while promising to "bring the benefits of AI to everyone," signed a deal with the Pentagon to use their AI technology to kill people. The outrage this caused among its employees, made Google cancel the contract. Though, at first glance, it seems like a victory for the non-violent use of AI, isn't it also quite naive? Technology firms working with the military-industrial complex is neither new or shocking. Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM are very involved without anybody paying much attention.
On AI and Jobs, We Are All Augmentarians Now
For a couple of days this week, I attended the EmTech NEXT conference at MIT, which is organized by MIT Technology Review. The focus of the event was that fabled idea "The Future of Work," and if you are on the side of the humans, the future seems pretty bright. Virtually every speaker (MIT folks, AI and robotics leaders) came out in favor of augmentation over automation. They say that AI and robots won't take our jobs, but rather augment them by doing the things we humans don't do so well. I must say that I was a bit surprised that augmentation has become the consensus view among experts.

In an expanded edition published in 1988, they responded to claims that their 1969 conclusions significantly reduced funding for neural network research: "Our version is that progress had already come to a virtual halt because of the lack of adequate basic theories… by the mid-1960s there had been a great many experiments with perceptrons, but no one had been able to explain why they were able to recognize certain kinds of patterns and not others."

World Cup 2018: Does form matter for teams competing in Russia?
England fans know the drill all too well - the national team heads into a major international football tournament having qualified with a near-perfect record. Hopes are high, but then… well, you know what happens - lacklustre performances or penalty shoot-out heartbreak, followed by an early flight home. So what really determines the success or failure of a team going into a major international football tournament like the World Cup? Is it a side's quality (class) or its recent performances (form)? Reality Check has teamed up with the BBC's statistics department to try to answer one of the biggest debates in football - how much does form matter? To do this, we built a computer program that predicts football results by analysing ratings data.
AI startups as innovation drivers
This is a clear sign that we need a European AI ecosystem rather than several ones at the level of individual countries. But so far, the continent is missing a clear strategy on how to achieve this. Even some of the most economically important sectors in Europe, like energy, automotive or agriculture, are currently underrepresented in the overall distribution of startups. European companies are top notch in technologies such as robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT) or self-driving cars, but, in comparison to other countries, the number of correspondent startups in Europe is low. This shows that mature European industries struggle to adapt to the next key technology trends – a must, if they want to maintain their leadership position.

However, they'll continue to work with the US military on a host of other projects, including AI projects, so long as they don't include surveillance that runs counter to human rights. "Google is in a spot at the moment," Wallis, editor-at-large for Digital Journal and author of more than a dozen books, told Loud & Clear hosts John Kiriakou and Nicole Roussell. "This is gold rush time for artificial intelligence; everybody wants a piece of it, and we're not talking about the sort of generic type of artificial intelligence -- we're talking about possibly thousands or millions of different kinds of artificial intelligence." In other words, the advent of artificially intelligent weapons is "inevitable," Wallis said.

Efficient Optimization Algorithms for Robust Principal Component Analysis and Its Variants

Robust PCA has drawn significant attention in the last decade due to its success in numerous application domains, ranging from bio-informatics, statistics, and machine learning to image and video processing in computer vision. Robust PCA and its variants such as sparse PCA and stable PCA can be formulated as optimization problems with exploitable special structures. Many specialized efficient optimization methods have been proposed to solve robust PCA and related problems. In this paper we review existing optimization methods for solving convex and nonconvex relaxations/variants of robust PCA, discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and elaborate on their convergence behaviors. We also provide some insights for possible future research directions including new algorithmic frameworks that might be suitable for implementing on multi-processor setting to handle large-scale problems.
