DeepMind: First major AI patent filings revealed

The applications relate to a number of the fundamental aspects of modern day machine learning, and are therefore of potential significance to anyone operating in the commercial AI sector. Artificial intelligence from Cambridge could unlock health data for clinical use

With 6,800 new scientific publications released every day (one every 12 seconds) data mining and horizon scanning is becoming increasingly difficult for medical researchers, which can lead to delayed discoveries in the life science space. One firm believes the solution could lie in bespoke, semi-automated software that combines artificial intelligence approaches, including semantic searching and machine learning, to sift through tens of millions of documents to identify genes, diseases, devices and many more scientific concepts. The semantic platform developed by Cambridge-based technology company SciBite, which is being piloted in partnership with medical research charity LifeArc, enables researchers to gain early insights and uncover information such as novel technologies, new drug targets/biomarkers and rare disease connections. The two firms say that this will improve the ability for researchers to identify emerging mega trends in medical research, with the ultimate aim of accelerating discoveries in the healthcare space. Neal Dunkinson, head of technical sales from SciBite said: "It's almost impossible to keep ahead of the volumes of data being created second to second by the life science industry. Our technology is designed to reduce the time spent mining data by up to 80%, providing researchers with a subset of scientifically-relevant information filtered from the vast amounts of raw data in a rapid, easy-to-interpret manner, allowing them to focus and accelerate their research. As you can imagine, this is a game-changer in the healthcare space where identifying valid new leads is highly-competitive".

Killer robots will only exist if we are stupid enough to let them

The idea of killer robots rising up and destroying humans is a Hollywood fantasy and a distraction from the more pressing dilemmas that intelligent machines present to society, according to one of Britain's most influential computer scientists. Sir Nigel Shadbolt, professor of computer science at the University of Oxford, predicts that AI will bring overwhelming benefits to humanity, revolutionising cancer diagnosis and treatment, and transforming education and the workplace. If problems arise, he said, it will not be because sentient machines have unexpectedly gone rogue in a Terminator-like scenario. "The danger is clearly not that robots will decide to put us away and have a robot revolution," he said. "If there [are] killer robots, it will be because we've been stupid enough to give it the instructions or software for it to do that without having a human in the loop deciding."

A Single Drone Helped Mexican Police Drop Crime 10 Percent

In Ensenada, a Mexican city about two hours south of Tijuana, a new crime fighter has taken to the skies. And over a few months on patrol, it's had quite the impact. The city's police department claims the solitary DJI Inspire 1 Quadcopter led to more than 500 arrests and a 10 percent drop in overall crime rates, with a 30 percent drop in home robberies. It's the latest example of drones slowly finding their place in civilian life, like soldiers returning from war, seeking to apply their skills to life in a country not entirely comfortable with what they were up to overseas. Unmanned aerial vehicles may have gotten their start with the military, flying recon missions in Vietnam and dropping bombs over Afghanistan.

Here, we highlight how an author's work may solve a particular set of real-world tasks or problems. By doing this, we aim to foster more and more machine, learning works, to be done by more and more Jamaican people. Today, we'll highlight the machine-learning work, a paper/algorithm called'Modelling Sensorineural Hearing-impaired Listeners' Perception of Speaker Intelligibility in Noise", by UWI lecturers Dr Lindon W. Falconer, Dr Andrรˆ Coy, and their overseas colleague, Professor Jon Barker. Jordan: How would you describe your work? Dr Coy, et al: Disabling hearing loss is a major challenge faced by many individuals in societies throughout the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that approximately 6.1 per cent of the world's population has disabling hearing loss, and about 93 per cent of these people are adults.


Google Prepares Google Home Multi-Language Support For Multiple Markets

Google is planning to bring support for more languages to its Google Assistant AI, so that its Google Home speaker could appeal to more consumers. Digitimes Research reported late last week that Google is planning to push sales of its Google Home speakers to more markets this 2018. With this in mind, the search engine giant is aiming to bring support for up to 30 languages to its voice assistant. Amazon's Alexa only supports three languages at present. To take advantage of the situation, Google wants to enable Google Assistant to support up to 30 languages with the use of its deep research in multi-language and semantics.
