'Flying brain' CIMON designed to follow German astronaut blasts off Friday

MIAMI – A floating, ball-shaped artificial intelligence robot specially trained to follow around a German astronaut at the International Space Station is scheduled to blast off Friday on its ground-breaking mission. The basketball-size device, called CIMON (Crew Interactive Mobile Companion), was described as a "flying brain" by Manfred Jaumann, head of microgravity payloads at Airbus SE. It launches from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Friday at 5:42 am, along with some 5,900 pounds (2,700 kilograms) of gear packed aboard SpaceX's unmanned Dragon cargo capsule. CIMON's activation will mark "a historical moment," becoming the first robot of its kind to interact with people in space, said Christian Karrasch, CIMON project manager at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), during a NASA press briefing Thursday. A project in the works for the past two years, CIMON has been trained to recognize the voice and face of Alexander Gerst, 42, a geophysicist with the European Space Agency.

The proposed method, called Sparse Evolutionary Training, also gives full artificial intelligence capability to inexpensive computers, meaning it will be possible to turn any internet device into an intelligent Internet of Things object which can send and receive data. Artificial neural networks are widely used in industry, science and medicine to make sense of vast amounts of data, such as in medical diagnostics and personalised medicine. But ANNs are typically made up of lots of layers and millions of nodes, which means their intelligence is severely limited and requires super-computational power. The team of scientists from the University of Derby, Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, and the University of Texas, Austin, have joined together to develop a method that could push artificial intelligence well beyond its current boundaries. The new system substantially accelerates machine learning by replacing the typical neuronal networks with sparse layers, enabling the use of artificial intelligence in major problems such as genetic disease diagnostics.

British doctors go on the defensive due to 'high-performing' 'GP at Hand' app

LONDON – A medical chatbot said to perform as well as or even better than human doctors has sparked a war of words in Britain, in a clash over how much the cash-strapped public health service should rely on artificial intelligence. AI company Babylon, which is already working with the National Health Service, claimed its chatbot scored higher marks than real live doctors in "robust tests." The British firm said it quizzed the AI using sample questions for trainee exams set by Britain's Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the professional body for family doctors. The programmed chatbot, a key feature of Babylon's "GP at Hand" app, scored 81 percent when sitting the test for the first time, while the average pass mark over the past five years for doctors was 72 percent, according to the company. Ali Parsa, its founder who presented the findings in London earlier this week, hailed the results as "a landmark." "(They) take humanity a significant step closer to achieving a world where no one is denied safe and accurate health advice," he said in a statement.

Kroger's efforts to play catch-up with Amazon in grocery delivery have taken it to the fringes of the "last mile" and a new partnership with an autonomous-driving startup that was hatched by guys who were involved in getting Google's driverless-car operation off the ground. It's the latest indication that the commercial logistics business is likely to have much more to do with shaping the early days of self-driven automotive transportation than the consumer side is. The Cincinnati-based supermarket chain, largest in the United States, said that it will begin piloting an "on-road, fully autonomous delivery experience" with Nuro, maker of the world's first unmanned road vehicle, in a city that the retailer hasn't yet announced, beginning this fall. The partnership will allow customers to place same-day delivery orders through Kroger's ClickList digital ordering system and Nuro's app. During the test, orders will be delivered by Nuro's fleet of autonomous vehicles, with human safety drivers to start out.

Babylon Healthcare Services Ltd., the fast-growing mobile medical consultation service, said its artificial intelligence software, in tests, can assess common conditions more accurately than human doctors. London-based Babylon's AI correctly answered 81 percent of diagnostic questions designed to mimic those trainee doctors must answer as part of the Royal College of General Practitioner's exam that must be passed to become a qualified GP doctor in the U.K. The exam is graded on a curve, but over the past five years, the average score trainees needed to pass was 72 percent. Babylon demonstrated this technology publicly for the first time in a live test at an event at London's Royal College of Physicians Wednesday. The company said it would publish the results of its tests online. It's made the AI tool available for free through its app and website in some parts of the U.K., including London, as well as Rwanda.
