British authorities looking into inappropriate use of data gathered by political consultant Cambridge Analytica from millions of Facebook users say some of the systems that accessed the material appear to be in Russia or a group of former Soviet states.

Marketers are exploring AI to understand what motivates and activates audiences at scale. As the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity (now in its 65th year) kicks off today, bets are high that the realization that advertising is broken and humans alone can't fix it will be top of mind among the nearly 20,000 marketers, advertisers and tech companies set to descend on the high-profile event. Indeed, there is no overlooking the numbers that underline a dangerous disconnect in what brands want to say and what people want to hear. Millions of ads are ignored every hour by consumers, record numbers are using adblocking technology to cut out unwanted noise and evidence is mounting that people crave meaningful experiences, not marketing speak. A funded PhD position is available at the Computer Science Department, School of Science, Loughborough University, UK, on the topic of the evolution of lifelong learning in neural networks. The aim is to develop new neuroevolution algorithms for lifelong learning. The objectives are to devise machine learning systems that autonomously adapt to changing conditions such as variation of the data distribution, variation of the problem domain or parameters, with minimal human intervention. The approach will use neuroevolution, neuromodulation, and other methodologies to continuously discover and update learning strategies, implement selective plasticity, and achieve continual learning. Leaked images appearing to show the Galaxy Note 9 has revealed further details of Samsung's next premium handset. The latest images come courtesy of notorious leaker Evan Blass, who shared a photo on Twitter showing the front and rear of the device, and a Chinese Twitter user who posted a picture of what seemed to be a switched-on Note 9. It appears to confirm that Samsung is sticking with a very similar design to that of the Galaxy Note 8, which featured an S Pen stylus. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. With little public scrutiny, the health insurance industry has joined forces with data brokers to vacuum up personal details about hundreds of millions of Americans, including, odds are, many readers of this story. The companies are tracking your race, education level, TV habits, marital status, net worth. Then they feed this information into complicated computer algorithms that spit out predictions about how much your health care could cost them. Are you a woman who recently changed your name? You could be newly married and have a pricey pregnancy pending. Or maybe you're stressed and anxious from a recent divorce.
