Cisco invests $100m into UK AI sector
In an effort to help drive digital innovation in the UK, Cisco has announced a $100m investment in the country's growing AI scene. The networking giant will partner with University College London (UCL) to open one of the world's largest research centres for AI which will house over 200 UCL academics and researchers. The new centre will also aid in developing the UK's AI talent pool. Prime Minister Theresa May and digital secretary Jeremy Wright have both backed Cisco's initiative which will operate alongside the government's own industrial strategy. Cisco's chairman and chief executive, Chuck Robbins explained the firm's reasoning behind its investment in the UK's AI sector, saying: "We believe that the UK's expertise in AI and its commitment to making sure future innovators have the right digital skills will help ensure the nation's citizens are well-positioned to capture the opportunity ahead."
No Man's Sky developer Sean Murray: 'It was as bad as things can get'
Sean Murray does not like talking to the press. He says this several times when we meet at the Guildford offices of Hello Games, the development studio he founded in 2008 with Grant Duncan, Ryan Doyle and David Ream. He is loquacious, but nervous. No one at the studio has spoken to any journalists for nearly two years, since the release of Murray's pet project No Man's Sky, an extraordinarily ambitious space exploration game that aimed to put an infinite universe on a games console โ a game that, when it didn't meet some players' high expectations, triggered an appalling internet harassment campaign that left the small studio and its staff reeling. It is hard to blame him for his hesitance.
Halifax and Lloyds online banking payments down: Customers experiencing problem transferring money
Halifax and Lloyds customers are being hit by major problems when they try to move their money. Both banks report issues with their online banking services. The problems appear to be with the faster payments system that is used across the UK to allow for quicker transfers. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere at the moment, from the Cambridge Analytica scandal to the UK's announcement of nearly ยฃ1 billion for AI sector development. Here at Methods we think AI is an exciting new technology which, if we think creatively enough, can be used to transform government services. We also believe that AI is for everyone, and the more people who get involved in AI the better it is for society overall. To get AI to work, you need as much data as you can lay your hands on. It is the lifeblood of AI.
Wanted: Inspiring name for Europe's 2020 Mars rover
Here's your chance to name the European rover that will go to Mars in 2020. Currently called ExoMars, the six-wheeled robot needs something a bit more engaging and inspiring for when it lands on the Red Planet. Astronaut Tim Peake is leading the hunt for a great moniker. He wants everyone to go to a special website set up for the purpose and enter a suggestion. But don't think "Spacey McSpaceFace" is a goer because this is not an online poll.

Human Factors in Hypertext (HUMAN) Opinion Mining, Summarization and Diversification Narrative and Hypertext I attended the Opinion Mining, Summarization and Diversification workshop. The workshop started with a talk titled: "On Reviews, Ratings and Collaborative Filtering," presented by Dr. Oren Sar Shalom, principal data scientist at Intuit, Israel. Next, Ophรฉlie Fraisier, a PhD student studying stance analysis on social media at Paul Sabatier University, France, presented: "Politics on Twitter: A Panorama," in which she surveyed methods of analyzing tweets to study and detect polarization and stances, as well as election prediction and political engagement. He showed how collective opinion mining can help capture the drivers behind opinions as opposed to individual opinion mining (or sentiment) which identifies single individual attitudes toward an item. I thank a million people! https://t.co/I3quPp6nw3 He also discussed a phenomenon in which people are likely to lie to pollsters (social desirability bias) but are honest to Google ("Digital Truth Serum") because Google incentivizes telling the truth. The paper sessions followed the keynote with two full papers and a short paper presentation. Google search data as "digital truth serum" - while reporting of child abuse go down at the recession time, Google search data indicates that real child abuse increases https://t.co/DQQoAotZqB However, it feels more like a research talk rather than a #keynote. Though still interesting, I'd rather hear about a #vision for this area of #research.

Whether it's the strict dress code for players or the customary strawberries and cream, this week, tradition looked alive and well as ever. At the same time, Wimbledon has not shied away from the latest in cutting-edge technology. This year, the club has continued its partnership with IBM, who is using data analytics and artificial intelligence to provide insights for the media, the players and their teams, as well as the fans. IBM invited Information Age along, this week, to their "bunker' at the stadium to learn all about the latest IBM technology that's currently at play and Wimbledon 2018. Underneath the stadium, the IBM team are processing and harnessing the power of vast sets of data to provide an immersive experience for fans.
UK utilities ready to embrace AI technology
New research has revealed that the utilities industry, which has struggled to innovate for some time, is now ready to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring much needed efficiencies to the sector. A recent poll, commissioned by field service management company Oneserve, found that 37 per cent of utilities companies in the UK have plans to integrate AI over the next five years while a quarter (25%) have already integrated the technology into their systems. The UK senior decision makers in the utilities industry cited monetary savings and customer retention as the two main driving factors for AI adoption. The research found that on average utilities companies lose ยฃ78,585 each, per year as a result of machine and system downtime. The inability to spot internal technical faults (41%) was given as the main reason for such huge loses followed by using old machinery and legacy systems (27%) and a lack of training which lead to miss-use by staff (20%).
British Army testing autonomous vehicles to supply frontline troops Internet of Business
Drones and other unmanned systems are to be tested on Salisbury Plain by the British military, to tackle the costly and often dangerous task of delivering essential supplies to frontline troops. One such company is Animal Dynamics, a spinout from Oxford University. The startup has turned to recent advances in computational analysis to help it learn from nature and challenge engineering conventions. By tapping into design lessons from millions of years of evolution, Animal Dynamics is producing machines that mirror the mechanics of animals to help them perform better and move more efficiently. The Financial Times reports that Stork, the firm's autonomous paraglider, is one of five unmanned transport concepts chosen by the British government's Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory for assessment during a four-week military exercise on Salisbury Plain this November. The Stork consumes less fuel than a conventional drone and can carry up to 100kg of supplies over 100km.
