DeepMind, a Google-owned lab that is at the front of the AI race, is gifting the University of Cambridge an undisclosed sum to appoint a "DeepMind Chair of Machine Learning". The donation comes after DeepMind and other tech companies have been criticised for poaching dozens of leading academics from top universities like Cambridge, luring them with big salaries that universities can't compete with. Expense management platform Chrome River has announced that it is to scale up its business presence across mainland Europe. Previously, the firm ran its EMEA operations solely through one central office based in London. However, it has now successfully opened a separate, dedicated regional office for mainland Europe - based in Munich, Germany. Nick Ludlow, the General Manager of the EMEA region for Chrome River, told Forbes that the expansion was primarily due to increased customer demand, on the continent, for its invoice solutions software. "With growing interest in the DACH region, it was the right time for us to open up a German subsidiary as a way of driving further regional growth and support for existing customers," he said.

Foreign Minister Taro Kono agreed Wednesday with his German counterpart to promote free trade amid a rising protectionist tide, while supporting a rules-based international order. During talks in Tokyo, Kono and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stressed the importance of closer economic ties just days after the signing of a free trade agreement between Japan and the European Union. "The free, open and rules-based international order faces a serious challenge," Kono said during a joint press briefing with Maas. "Closer cooperation between Japan and Germany, (countries) that share the same values such as democracy, and lead Asia and Europe … is taking on greater importance than ever." The signing earlier this month of the free trade deal, which covers about a third of the world's economy, has been seen as symbolic of the concerted effort to counter the increasingly protectionist steps taken by U.S. President Donald Trump.
