Cambridge takes global AI lead as Google DeepMind backs Machine Learning chair Business Weekly Technology News Business news
Cambridge University is launching a DeepMind Chair of Machine Learning, thanks to a benefaction from the world-leading British AI company โ Google's DeepMind โ whose IP was born within the globally acclaimed seat of learning. The new chair, to be based at Cambridge's Department of Computer Science and Technology, will build on the university's strengths in computer science and engineering and will be a focal point for the wide range of AI-related research taking place across the university. Cambridge researchers are designing systems that are cybersecure, model human reasoning, interact in affective ways with us, uniquely identify us by our face and give insights into our biological makeup. The first DeepMind chair is expected to take up their position in October 2019, following an international search by the department. The chair will have full academic freedom to pursue research in the field of machine learning.
Developing brain atlas using deep learning algorithms
A team of researchers from the Brain Research Institute of the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) have developed a fully automated brain registration method that could be used to segment brain regions of interest in mice. Neuroscientists are always seeking out new methods of exploring the structure and function of different brain regions, which are initially applied on animals but could eventually lead to important discoveries about the organization of the human brain. "My lab aims to reveal how the mammalian brain develops its abilities to process and react to sensory stimuli," Theofanis Karayannis, one of the researchers who carried out the study told Tech Xplore. "Most of the work we do is on the experimental side, utilizing the mouse as a model system and techniques that range from molecular-genetic to functional and anatomical." This study is part of a larger project, which also includes "Exploring Brain-wide Development of Inhibition through Deep Learning," a study in which Karayannis and his colleagues use deep learning algorithms to comprehensively track the so-called inhibitory neurons over time in order to gauge the development of capabilities of the brain at specific points in time.
AI is being used to spot the signs of a diabetes-induced eye disease
One hospital is now allowing artificial intelligence to take the reigns and diagnose its patients. The UI Health Care-Iowa River Landing in Coralville, Iowa has become the first hospital to adopt a new AI-powered machine to spot the early warning signs of diabetic retinopathy. If left undiagnosed, the condition, which arises as a complication for patients who suffer with either type one or type two diabetes, can cause blindness. The machine is capable of scanning and analysing the retinas of at-risk patients and will provide its own diagnosis without any human assistance. Dubbed IDx-DR, the technology has an 87 per cent sensitivity for the disease.

BBC down: Website but not iPlayer stops working amid major outage
The BBC website has stopped working for users across the country. Many parts of the site โ including News, Sport and other sections, though not iPlayer โ went offline, according to users. Instead, users only saw a remarkably traditional 500 error, which plays on the error message that shows when BBC TV stops working. "We're aware that some people are having problems accessing some parts of our website," the BBC press office tweeted. "We're trying to fix this as soon as possible."

Viagra Inventor Raises $10m To Find Medicines For Rare Diseases With AI
Dr David Brown, the co-inventor of Viagra, has raised $10 million for his latest healthcare startup, Healx, which is using artificial intelligence to speed up the development of medicines that can be used to treat rare diseases. The funding round was led by venture capital firm Balderton Capital, which has also backed companies like Citymapper, Bebo, and Revolut. Existing investors, Jonathan Milner and Amadeus Capital also participated in the series A round. Brown, Healx's chief scientific officer, founded Healx in 2014 with Cambridge University professor Dr Andreas Bender and Dr Tim Guilliams, who completed a PhD at Cambridge in biophysical neuroscience before becoming an entrepreneur. Brown initially developed viagra to treat heart patients but it soon became apparent that it could be used for other purposes.
Nikkei falls back on selling of mainstay issues
The benchmark Nikkei average dropped on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Thursday, dragged down by the weakness of heavily weighted component issues. But investor sentiment improved in the Tokyo market, with concerns over U.S.-Europe trade friction easing to some extent following reports of some positive results from the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday, brokers said.
