That's exactly the scenario parents in one of the major Dutch cities have encountered ever since the school system embraced AI to create a more equitable and evenly distributed student allocation system.

Sky Q box could allow viewers to stop using their remote and control everything with their voice
Sky Q could allow users to drop their remotes and control everything with their voice instead. The TV remote might have been a fixture of watching television for much longer even than Sky has been a part of the experience. But the company could allow people to swap it out for just shouting at their TV, it has suggested. Sky already offers its users the ability to talk to their Sky box, through the current Sky remote. Users can ask for particular films or channels, for instance, and they will come up, and Sky says that there are 11 million voice requests each month.
Poems by Rabbie Burns can now be distinguished from forgeries
Scientists have developed a new chemical test which can differentiate between genuine works by Robert Burns and thousands of forgeries. To create the new test, researchers pinpointed the types of ink and paper favoured by the Bard of Ayrshire when writing his poems. This information was fed into a computer to teach the machine learning algorithm to be able to classify forgeries from the genuine article, which can sell for up to ยฃ90,000 ($120,000) at auction. Researchers then tested out the system on known fakes and real works by the 18th Century poet, best known for writing New Years Eve anthem'Auld Lang Syne'. Authenticating manuscripts can be a complicated process that typically damages parts of the original paper or ink.
Cockroach 'bots' and rugged delivery drones wow at U.K.'s biggest air show
LONDON, / CHICAGO โ Boffins at U.K. engineering giant Rolls-Royce proudly displayed an array of miniature robots at this year's Farnborough air show, best known as a major marketplace for passenger planes but also a test bed for the aviation industry's wilder imaginings. Designed to speed up engine overhauls, the manufacturer's tiny cockroach-like drones would remove the need for power plants to be detached from aircraft during maintenance work. The "swarming" bots, less than half an inch across, are designed to roam engine turbines in gangs, beaming pictures back to inspection crews after being deposited by so-called "snake" hosts that work their way through the engine. If the bots don't get you the drones will. The biannual air show was awash with unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, ranging from delivery craft that guarantee to gently deposit a parcel by your door to the latest military types intent on blowing stuff up.

Artificial intelligence seeks out new anticancer drugs
Computers and chemists have been friendly for a long time. But when it comes to drug discovery, current computational methods are often too drawn out and inefficient to identify the mechanism of action of drugs. Now, a multidisciplinary team of researchers believes artificial intelligence could help out in pharmacology studies. The team's new approach successfully identified a potent inhibitor for 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme that is over-expressed in a range of human tumours. Identifying how drug candidates interact with their target to treat disease is key to drug development.
Student develops AI algorithms that identify and assess cancerous lung nodules
The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation recently brought together more than 650 data scientists, engineers and designers from 68 countries to build open source tools to fight the world's deadliest cancer. During the Concept to Clinic Challenge, contributors built state-of-the-art algorithms applied to the detection and assessment of lung nodules from CT scans to bring advancements in machine learning into medical clinics. The foundation put up $100,000 in prizes for top contributors. Willi Gierke, a student who is getting his masters in IT/systems engineering at Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany, was the top prizewinner, taking home more than $30,000. The code developed during this challenge is openly available for anyone to learn from and use.
Snap40 raises $8M for its AI-powered patient monitoring solution
Snap40, a Scottish startup that has developed an AI-enabled wearable device to help health professionals monitor patients either on the hospital ward or at home, has raised $8 million in seed funding. The round is led by ADV, with participation from MMC Ventures, and brings total funding to $10 million. Originally launched as a clinical pilot in August 2016, the Snap40 hardware and software platform initially set out to enable hospitals to monitor patients whose health is at risk of rapidly deteriorating while on ward, but has since expanded to increasingly focus on what happens after a patient is discharged, in addition to monitoring clinical trials. Claiming to have the same accuracy as ICU monitoring, the wearable device captures oxygen saturation, respiration rate, pulse rate, temperature, movement and posture. In addition to onboard sensors, the Snap40 platform offers integrations with other devices e.g. a BP cuff, weighing scales, a glucose monitor.
