3 fundamental keys to digital transformation

A surprising number of enterprises underestimate the momentum of digitization, and more significantly, the behavioral changes and expectations that come with it. Every enterprise knows that the only way to combat digital disruption from a competitor is total digital transformation, yet an astonishing 84 percent fail to achieve it. A major reason for this is that digital transformation often means abandoning the status quo to ensure future survival. This is not an easy call to make when it means shifting focus from a declining but still profitable line of business to a more digital approach, and companies that act boldly and succeed are highly admired. Netflix, which dared to cannibalize a hugely popular DVD distribution business to make way for online streaming, is a good example.


Creating better stroke treatment using AI and blockchain technology

One in six people will suffer from stroke in their lifetime. Of the estimated 15 million victims worldwide, 6 million die every year and another 6 million are permanently disabled. Worse, the incidence of strokes is increasing, especially among people under age 55. By 2050, the number of strokes will have more than doubled, according to the American Stroke Association. Annual costs of stroke in the European Union alone are estimated at $53.1 billion.


Why are AI researchers so obsessed with games?

In the video game, two teams of five players are placed at opposite ends of a square arena, and fight past each other using melee and spells to destroy their opponent's base. For the researcher's software to win against the pros, it would be like a robot learning to dunk on Michael Jordan. Games are an easy way for those of us without PhDs to understand how far AI research has come: When put in complex situations, can an AI beat humans? We understand what it meant for IBM's DeepBlue to beat Garry Kasparov in chess, and DeepMind's AlphaGo beating Lee Sedol in Go--decades of human practice and skill were defeated by mechanical computation. Outside of those publicized matches, AI researchers have worked for decades to build AI agents that are superhuman at playing Atari games, checkers, and even Super Smash Bros.


Mathematics as information compression via the matching and unification of patterns

This paper describes a novel perspective on the foundations of mathematics: how mathematics may be seen to be largely about 'information compression via the matching and unification of patterns' (ICMUP). ICMUP is itself a novel approach to information compression, couched in terms of non-mathematical primitives, as is necessary in any investigation of the foundations of mathematics. This new perspective on the foundations of mathematics has grown out of an extensive programme of research developing the "SP Theory of Intelligence" and its realisation in the "SP Computer Model", a system in which a generalised version of ICMUP -- the powerful concept of SP-multiple-alignment -- plays a central role. These ideas may be seen to be part of a "Big Picture" comprising six areas of interest, with information compression as a unifying theme. The paper describes the close relation between mathematics and information compression, and describes examples showing how variants of ICMUP may be seen in widely-used structures and operations in mathematics. Examples are also given to show how the mathematics-related disciplines of logic and computing may be understood as ICMUP. There are many potential benefits and applications of these ideas.


Using Machine Learning Safely in Automotive Software: An Assessment and Adaption of Software Process Requirements in ISO 26262

The use of machine learning (ML) is on the rise in many sectors of software development, and automotive software development is no different. In particular, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving Systems (ADS) are two areas where ML plays a significant role. In automotive development, safety is a critical objective, and the emergence of standards such as ISO 26262 has helped focus industry practices to address safety in a systematic and consistent way. Unfortunately, these standards were not designed to accommodate technologies such as ML or the type of functionality that is provided by an ADS and this has created a conflict between the need to innovate and the need to improve safety. In this report, we take steps to address this conflict by doing a detailed assessment and adaption of ISO 26262 for ML, specifically in the context of supervised learning. First we analyze the key factors that are the source of the conflict. Then we assess each software development process requirement (Part 6 of ISO 26262) for applicability to ML. Where there are gaps, we propose new requirements to address the gaps. Finally we discuss the application of this adapted and extended variant of Part 6 to ML development scenarios.


Faster Convergence & Generalization in DNNs

Deep neural networks have gained tremendous popularity in last few years. They have been applied for the task of classification in almost every domain. Despite the success, deep networks can be incredibly slow to train for even moderate sized models on sufficiently large datasets. Additionally, these networks require large amounts of data to be able to generalize. The importance of speeding up convergence, and generalization in deep networks can not be overstated. In this work, we develop an optimization algorithm based on generalized-optimal updates derived from minibatches that lead to faster convergence. Towards the end, we demonstrate on two benchmark datasets that the proposed method achieves two orders of magnitude speed up over traditional back-propagation, and is more robust to noise/over-fitting.


Principles for Developing a Knowledge Graph of Interlinked Events from News Headlines on Twitter

The ever-growing datasets published on Linked Open Data mainly contain encyclopedic information. However, there is a lack of quality structured and semantically annotated datasets extracted from unstructured real-time sources. In this paper, we present principles for developing a knowledge graph of interlinked events using the case study of news headlines published on Twitter which is a real-time and eventful source of fresh information. We represent the essential pipeline containing the required tasks ranging from choosing background data model, event annotation (i.e., event recognition and classification), entity annotation and eventually interlinking events. The state-of-the-art is limited to domain-specific scenarios for recognizing and classifying events, whereas this paper plays the role of a domain-agnostic road-map for developing a knowledge graph of interlinked events.


LISA: Explaining Recurrent Neural Network Judgments via Layer-wIse Semantic Accumulation and Example to Pattern Transformation

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are temporal networks and cumulative in nature that have shown promising results in various natural language processing tasks. Despite their success, it still remains a challenge to understand their hidden behavior. In this work, we analyze and interpret the cumulative nature of RNN via a proposed technique named as Layer-wIse-Semantic-Accumulation (LISA) for explaining decisions and detecting the most likely (i.e., saliency) patterns that the network relies on while decision making. We demonstrate (1) LISA: "How an RNN accumulates or builds semantics during its sequential processing for a given text example and expected response" (2) Example2pattern: "How the saliency patterns look like for each category in the data according to the network in decision making". We analyse the sensitiveness of RNNs about different inputs to check the increase or decrease in prediction scores and further extract the saliency patterns learned by the network. We employ two relation classification datasets: SemEval 10 Task 8 and TAC KBP Slot Filling to explain RNN predictions via the LISA and example2pattern.


Software engineering and the SP Theory of Intelligence

This paper describes a novel approach to software engineering derived from the "SP Theory of Intelligence" and its realisation in the "SP Computer Model". Despite superficial appearances, it is shown that many of the key ideas in software engineering have counterparts in the structure and workings of the SP system. Potential benefits of this new approach to software engineering include: the automation or semi-automation of software development, with support for programming of the SP system where necessary; allowing programmers to concentrate on 'world-oriented' parallelism, without worries about parallelism to speed up processing; support for the long-term goal of programming the SP system via written or spoken natural language; reducing or eliminating the distinction between 'design' and 'implementation'; reducing or eliminating operations like compiling or interpretation; reducing or eliminating the need for verification of software; reducing the need for validation of software; no formal distinction between program and database; the potential for substantial reductions in the number of types of data file and the number of computer languages; benefits for version control; and reducing technical debt.


Combining Graph-based Dependency Features with Convolutional Neural Network for Answer Triggering

Answer triggering is the task of selecting the best-suited answer for a given question from a set of candidate answers if exists. In this paper, we present a hybrid deep learning model for answer triggering, which combines several dependency graph based alignment features, namely graph edit distance, graph-based similarity and dependency graph coverage, with dense vector embeddings from a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Our experiments on the WikiQA dataset show that such a combination can more accurately trigger a candidate answer compared to the previous state-of-the-art models. Comparative study on WikiQA dataset shows 5.86% absolute F-score improvement at the question level.
