Meet Vector, a tiny home robot with a big personality
I'm sitting in Anki's head office in San Francisco, trying to work out who's sawing logs. Turns out, it's coming from a palm-sized robot called Vector, sitting on a charging dock getting some shut-eye. Anki is the company behind Cozmo, an AI-equipped toy robot that's sold over 1.5 million units. Unlike the kid-friendly Cozmo, Vector is designed for the entire family to interact with in the home. Home robots are familiar to many of us from the realms of cartoons and science fiction, like Rosie from The Jetsons or even R2-D2. But the fiction is a long way from the technological reality today.

The up and coming technology will be adopted by the large financial firms and will dominate the market; however, Google and Facebook are also looking into the area, which will ultimately compete with the already existing finance giants. Although we'd like to think that our company is the best in the field, the leaders in FinTech currently are "Wealthfront and Betterment in the US and Nutmeg, MoneyFarm, and Wealthify in the UK," says Bernstein.

Once upon a time, a bot deep in a game of tic-tac-toe figured out that making improbable moves caused its bot opponent to crash. Moments when experimental bots go rogue--some would call it cheating--are not typically celebrated in scientific papers or press releases. Most AI researchers strive to avoid them, but a select few document and study these bugs in the hopes of revealing the roots of algorithmic impishness. "We don't want to wait until these things start to appear in the real world," says Victoria Krakovna, a research scientist at Alphabet's DeepMind unit. Krakovna is the keeper of a crowdsourced list of AI bugs.
Spending for machine learning in radiology expected to soar
The market for machine learning in medical imaging will continue to grow, reaching about $2 billion in annual expenditures worldwide by 2023. That's the estimate of Signify Research, a research organization based in the United Kingdom. Signify Research sees particularly rapid expansion of the market for algorithms using deep learning to support software used in image analysis. It estimates the market at less than $200 million this year, but growing to nearly $1.4 billion by 2023. The consultancy defines machine learning applications as encompassing software for automated detection, quantification, decision support and diagnosis.

Tommy Robinson's Instagram account was deleted 'in error' and is back online, spokesperson confirms
The removal of Tommy Robinson's account was done "in error" and he is now back on the site, Instagram has said. The site looked to have joined a whole host of technology companies in taking a stand against the far-right and conspiracy theorists when it removed the activist. But it said soon after that the ban was a mistake and has been retracted. "The account @realtommyrobinson was removed in error and has since been reactivated," an Instagram spokesperson said. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
Twitter says it hasn't banned Alex Jones or Infowars because 'he hasn't violated our rules'
Twitter will not suspend Alex Jones or Infowars because they have not broken any rules, its CEO has said. Just about every other major technology company โ including Apple, Facebook, YouTube and Spotify โ have all acted to either completley ban or punish the controversial conspiracy theorist radio host. But Twitter says that his posts are not in contravention of any rules and so he will stay up. That is despite Jones having used the platform to amplify his beliefs, which include claims that the Sandy Hook school shooting did not actually happen at all and that those mourning murdered loved ones were paid actors. How 3 developers used Core ML to run AI models on an iPhone
Apple's first iPhone launched in 2007, decades after the concept of machine learning -- a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that employs mathematical techniques that "teach" software to make sense of complicated datasets -- rose to prominence. But it was only recently that the two collided. Apple launched Core ML, a framework designed to speed up machine learning tasks, alongside iOS 11 in May 2017. The Cupertino company shipped its first chip purpose-built for AI, the A11 Bionic, in last year's iPhone X. And at the 2018 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), it took the wraps off Core ML 2, a new and improved version of Core ML; and Create ML, a GPU-accelerated tool for native AI model training on Macs.
It's Still Early Days for Machine Learning Adoption
Despite the hype surrounding artificial intelligence, we're still in the early stages of adopting machine learning in the enterprise, according to a new survey released today by O'Reilly Media. The survey also found that large-scale production deep learning rarely happens on the cloud, and that companies pursuing machine learning are actively embracing privacy, security, and fairness. Nearly half (49%) of the 11,400 people who took O'Reilly's survey this June indicated they were in the exploration phase of machine learning and have not deployed any machine learning models into production. That compares to 36% of who said they were an early adopter (models in production from two to five years), while 15% considered themselves sophisticated users (models in production for more than five years). "A lot of people are very interested in machine learning, but a lot of them are in the getting-started phase in terms of actually putting these things into productions in products and services," O'Reilly's Chief Data Scientist Ben Lorica tells Datanami.
Artificial intelligence is not a silver bullet for cyber security Computing
Despite the high number of IT decision-makers who consider artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) important in stopping future cyber security threats, a significant proportion also view discussions around the subject to be pure vendor hype. A white paper released by cyber security software provider ESET shows a notable difference between regions of the world in their approach to AI and ML. IT professionals in the USA were much more likely to believe in the power of these technologies: 82 per cent said that they would be a'silver bullet' in solving future security challenges, compared to 67 and 66 per cent in the UK and Germany, respectively. However, US respondents were also, conversely, more sceptical about the possibilities, with 65 per cent disregarding current discussions as hype. ESET says that the promises made by IT vendors around AI and ML '[have] the potential to put businesses in a position where security professionals are relying too much on the development of AI and not focussing enough on a joint and multi-layered approach of human and machine'.
