A bagging and importance sampling approach to Support Vector Machines

An importance sampling and bagging approach to solving the support vector machine (SVM) problem in the context of large databases is presented and evaluated. Our algorithm builds on the nearest neighbors ideas presented in Camelo at al. (2015). As in that reference, the goal of the present proposal is to achieve a faster solution of the SVM problem without a significance loss in the prediction error. The performance of the methodology is evaluated in benchmark examples and theoretical aspects of subsample methods are discussed.
Extending Dynamic Bayesian Networks for Anomaly Detection in Complex Logs

Checking various log files from different processes can be a tedious task as these logs contain lots of events, each with a (possibly large) number of attributes. We developed a way to automatically model log files with a dozen attributes and detect outlier traces in the data. For that we extend Dynamic Bayesian Networks to model the normal behavior found in log files. We introduce a new algorithm that is able to learn a model of a log file starting from the data itself. The model is capable of scoring traces even when new values or new combinations of values appear in the log file and has the ability to give a decomposition of the score indicating the root cause for the anomalies.
AWS Adding Artificial Intelligence, Compute Services to Cloud Lineup
NEW YORK--Amazon is dealing with striking workers in Europe, site disruptions during its Prime Day sale event and protestors inside and out of the Javits Convention Center, site of this week's AWS NYC Summit 2018. None of which appeared to bother Amazon Web Services executives at the Summit, who announced new capabilities for its artificial intelligence machine learning and compute services on the AWS cloud. With artificial intelligence and machine learning services in demand, AWS rolled out improvements to its SageMaker service, which enables users to build and deploy models in the cloud. Dr. Matt Wood, AWS's General Manager for Machine Learning, announced two updates to the help speed up the service: SageMaker Streaming Algorithms and SageMaker Batch Transform. Streaming Algorithms enables users to stream large amounts of training data from the S3 storage service into SageMaker.

The way smaller countries choose to use and invest in AI will affect their own power and status in the international system. Middle powers--countries like Australia, France, Singapore, and South Korea--are generally prosperous and technologically advanced, with small-to-medium-sized populations.

Experts used a classic psychological test to compare how adults and children respond to an identical task when in the presence of their peers and robots. They showed that while adult's opinions are often influenced by peers, they are easily able to resist being persuaded by robots - with children aged between seven and nine were more likely to give the same responses as the robots, even if they were obviously incorrect. Fifty years ago this month, in the midst of the Cold War, nations began signing an international treaty to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. Today, as artificial intelligence and machine learning reshape every aspect of our lives, the world confronts a challenge of similar magnitude, and it needs a similar response. There is a danger in pushing the parallel between nuclear weapons and AI too far. But the greater risk lies in ignoring the consequences of unleashing technologies whose goals are neither predictable nor aligned with our values. The immediate prelude to the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was the Cuban missile crisis in 1962.

With all the talk about AI leaving people jobless, it's nice to see a positive perspective, A report from Robert Half Technology UK asked CIOs if AI will have a positive or negative impact on job creation and recruitment, finding that over half (51 per cent) think the effects will be positive. More precisely, 14 per cent think it will have a "very positive impact". The research also showed that almost two thirds (64 per cent) think AI will have a positive effect on employee productivity, too. "AI will transform businesses and enable them to enter new markets, diversify their operations, improve their ability to address their customers' needs and improve their competitive advantage," said Matt Weston, UK Managing Director at Robert Half. "AI's potential to also transform the way we work can't be overshadowed. In fact, a quarter of CIOs in the UK are already considering the expectations of their future IT departments; both the staffing and the infrastructure requirements that will accompany this".
Pentagon Plans to Publish Broad Artificial Intelligence Strategy 'Within Weeks'
A top Defense Department tech official on Tuesday said the Pentagon is weeks away from publishing its first broad strategy for artificial intelligence. The department plans to release a report detailing its long-term plans for artificial intelligence "within weeks" as leaders increasingly stress the technology's potential to strengthen national security, said Thomas Michelli, the department's acting deputy chief information officer for cybersecurity. Though he didn't disclose specifics regarding the strategy, Michelli said the Pentagon is standing up a number of artificial intelligence capabilities across the enterprise and people should expect "a big announcement" in the weeks to come. The department's updated cyber strategy, which is scheduled to publish shortly before the artificial intelligence plan, will also discuss AI and offer more details on how the military is funneling additional resources into the technology, according to Michelli. "We have to move forward or else we'll lose [our] competitive advantage," he said at a forum hosted by GovernmentCIO Media.

Slack, the workplace messaging app, has stopped working. Users are finding themselves unable to send or receive messages – or really see anything at all. Slack's status page does not show the issue. But it is being widely reported across the internet and has been verified by The Independent. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
Alex Jones radio channel taken offline – but not because of his conspiracy theories or controversies
Alex Jones's flagship radio channel is now silent – but not for the same reason as everyone else took him offline. The Federal Communications Commission has taken down Jones's flagship radio station, Liberty Radio, according to reports. It was taken offline because it was operating as a pirate radio station, the Association Press said. The lawsuit filed against those behind the station claimed that Liberty Radio had been broadcasting since at least 2013. It was doing so without a license, apparently from an apartment in Austin, Texas.
