But by demonstrating the link between poor sanitary conditions and high mortality rates in hospitals, it was her pioneering use of data collection and visualisation that still resonates today. In 2018, medicine faces a different set of challenges, with longer life expectancies and population growth increasing the number of patients suffering with chronic conditions requiring ongoing care. This has led to the cost of delivering health care increasing faster than GDP and quickly becoming unsustainable. Over 160 years might have passed since Florence Nightingale's day, but addressing these challenges still depends on data.

Evolution shows that social mimicry is a major component of our survival mechanism, pushing us to belong to groups. We're all subject to the chameleon effect, this tendency to unconsciously mirror what "others" do, and one of its most apparent manifestations is language and accents. Members of the same social group tend to mimic the speech patterns of others, leading to the rise of different regional accents within the same language. In the Southern United States, for example, English has developed in contact with Spanish, leading speakers on the two sides of the borders to pick up dialectal elements Like in Puerto Rico, the mix was so deep that "Spanglish" appeared. On both sides of the pond, in the United States and Britain, people speak English, yet with very distinctive accents that, in some cases, could be mutually unintelligible.

There is a strong and natural relationship between robots and rubber duckies. Being small, cheap, colorful, and pleasingly compliant, duckies became a sort of physical Stanford Bunny--when you want to show the scale of a robot, or give a robot something to visually locate or grasp or something, just toss a duckie in there. This relationship was formalized through the 2016 ICRA conference, where duckies inspired a bunch of videos and some poetry that is surprisingly not terrible. Since then, duckies have been taking over in robotics--at this point, I'm fairly certain that Andrea Censi at ETH Zurich is held hostage by (and doing the bidding of) a small army of little yellow duckies. This would explain why an entire duckie village full of duckie-sized autonomous cars that you can learn how to program is now on Kickstarter, with the hope that you'll help them take over the entire world.
New Nvidia Gaming Chips Tap Artificial Intelligence for Speed
At a Gamescom 2018 press conference in Cologne, Germany, Nvidia rolled out its newest generation of gaming chips - the RTX 2070, RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti. They are based on its recently launched chip blueprint called "Turing," which Nvidia is also using for higher-priced chips announced last week for game designers, movie makers and other computer graphics professionals. The chips will range from $499 to $999 and will be available in retail stores starting Sept. 20, Chief Executive Jensen Huang said at the event.
Apple Store evacuated after 'exploding' iPad goes off in shop
An Apple Store in Amsterdam had to be cleared after an iPad exploded in the shop, according to local reports. The battery inside the tablet appears to have caught fire and create a dangerous situation inside the store. It was quickly secured and placed into a bucket of sand to ensure that any fire was contained. But because of the potential for dangerous vapours to be released the store was shut down and three people were treated for breathing difficulties, the local fire department tweeted. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.

Pigs can recognise whether they are looking at the front or back of a human head using key features like our mouths and noses as cues. In visual tasks, the animals were able to pick out whether they were looking at someone's face or the back of their head with up to 80 per cent accuracy. Scientists said their paper shows pigs have better visual-based memory and intelligence than previous studies suggest. Pigs can recognise whether they are looking at the front or back of a human head using key features like our mouths and noses as cues. In the first of two studies from researchers at the Messerli Research Institute in Vienna, Austria, two groups of pigs were trained to discriminate between the front and back of the heads of ten people via photos on a computer screen.

The end of this article is to simply bring light to this seemingly technical world which would affect us positively if we understand and make use of the advantages it comes with. Big data basically refers to data sets that are so large in multiple varieties (example videos and images) and comes at such a speed that it is virtually impossible to use the traditional data processing applications to handle them. Every day, data is being generated in various ways and forms through devices, sensors and new technology platforms. Due to the nature of collection, it is often unstructured, however big data encompasses all data whether structured, semi structured or unstructured. The measure of what is considered big data keeps growing, as data keeps being collected.
MIT researchers are developing AI for tracking sensors inside the body with wireless signals
Researchers from MIT's Computer Science AI Lab (CSAIL) are developing methods for using wireless radio signals to detect sensors inside the human body. The ReMix system could be used to find ingestible microchip implants, a technique its creators hope can someday assist in medical imaging, delivering drugs to specific parts of the body, or tracking the movement of tumors. A study detailing the team's findings is being presented this week at the SIGCOMM international conference in Budapest, Hungary. Initial tests were conducted by placing a microchip inside a fake tumor and then placing that fake tumor into varying forms of animal tissue, like a whole chicken, pork belly, or containers of chicken fat or phantom human tissue. The system was created in collaboration with researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital.

Artificial intelligence will change the world. Because so many people and companies believe this, AI and the entire technological ecosystem in which it functions are highly valuable to private-sector organizations and nation-states. That means that nations will try to identify, steal, and corrupt or otherwise counteract the AI and related assets of others, and will use AI against each other in pursuit of their own national interests. And that presents the United States and its allies with a classic counterintelligence problem in a novel and high-stakes context: How do we protect a valuable national asset against a range of threats from hostile foreign actors, and how do we protect ourselves against the threat from AI in the hands of adversaries? In the broad and diverse discussion of artificial intelligence in the global technological and economic infrastructure of the future, this question has received remarkably little attention. In this post and others to follow, I will endeavor to explore some of the counterintelligence risks and problems presented by AI and the AI ecosystem. I'll first talk about the general problem of AI and counterintelligence and then, in later posts, dive into some of the specific areas that cause me the greatest concern in this sphere. Apple caves in to China and removes 25,000 apps from App Store
Apple has pulled thousands of apps from its App Store in China, following criticism from government-backed media in the country. Local reports suggest the cull involved up to 25,000 apps related to gambling and lottery games, though Apple did not confirm the number. China is Apple's most important market outside the US, as well as the home to iPhone and iPad production, and the trillion-dollar company appears to have acted quickly following the criticism to avoid further backlash. "Gambling apps are illegal and not allowed on the App Store in China," Apple said in a statement.
