Armed with a mouse and computer screen instead of a scalpel and operating theatre, cardiologist Benjamin Meder carefully places the electrodes of a pacemaker in a beating, digital heart. Using this "digital twin" that mimics the electrical and physical properties of the cells in patient 7497's heart, Meder runs simulations to see if the pacemaker can keep the congestive heart failure sufferer alive, before he has inserted a knife. The digital heart twin developed by Siemens Healthineers is one example of how medical device makers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to help doctors make more precise diagnoses as medicine enters an increasingly personalised age. The challenge for Siemens Healthineers and rivals such as Philips and GE Healthcare is to keep an edge over tech giants from Alphabet's Google to Alibaba that hope to use big data to grab a slice of healthcare spending. With healthcare budgets under increasing pressure, AI tools such as the digital heart twin could save tens of thousands of dollars by predicting outcomes and avoiding unnecessary surgery.

Japan's former Olympics minister said Thursday it would be difficult to introduce daylight saving time ahead of the 2020 Games in Tokyo, a move that has been discussed as a way to mitigate the nation's scorching heat during the sporting event. "A part of me still wants to do this, but the reality is it's a difficult timeline -- especially when you think about issues around computer systems," said Toshiaki Endo, former minister and senior Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker, to reporters after the party's first meeting on the measure at its headquarters in Tokyo. Endo also currently serves as a vice president of the Tokyo Organising Committee for the games. The ruling party's lawmakers gathered for a study session on the possibility of introducing daylight savings time after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave instructions last month to examine its pros and cons. Fast-forwarding the clock has been seen by some as a way for Japan to combat its sultry midsummer weather.
US kids spend too much time in front of a screen and too little asleep, study finds
Only one in 20 kids in the United States meets guidelines on sleep, exercise and screen time, and nearly a third are outside recommendations for all three, a new study has found. On average, children aged eight to 11 spent 3.6 hours a day glued to a TV, mobile phone, tablet or computer screen, nearly double the suggested limit of two hours, researchers found. Too little sleep and excess screen time were clearly linked to a drop-off in cognitive skills, such as language ability, memory, and task completion, they reported in the Lancet Child & Adolescent Health. "We found that more than two hours of recreational screen time in children was associated with poorer cognitive development," said lead author Jeremy Walsh, a researcher at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute. "Based on our findings, paediatricians, parents, educators and policymakers should promote limiting recreation screen time and prioritising healthy sleep routines during childhood and adolescence."

Machine learning cybersecurity startup Darktrace raises $50M on $1.65B valuation - SiliconANGLE
Machine learning cybersecurity startup Darktrace Ltd. said today it has raised $50 million in new late-stage funding on a valuation of $1.65 billion to further international expansion and development. The Series E round was led by Vitruvian Partners and included existing investors KKR and 1011 Ventures. Founded in 2013, Darktrace pitches itself as the leader in "Enterprise Immune System Technology" with a cybersecurity product that tackles advanced cyberthreats using a machine learning platform developed at the United Kingdom's University of Cambridge. Differentiating itself from others in the market, Darktrace claims its platform is based on the "biological principles of the human immune system." It also says the platform can learn "self," which is said to constitute "the normal pattern of life for the organization, its users and devices – and detecting subtle deviations from this normal behavior, which suggest a compromise, breach or cyber-attack."
