The public queues for hours at the Musée du Louvre in Paris to catch a glimpse of this much studied portrait. But, according to AI, it's not much to look at really. At least that is the outcome from a project being undertaken at the Art and Artificial Intelligence Lab at Rutgers University. The team at Rutgers has been using AI to analyze and create art for the past five years, studying around 80,000 different paintings by over 1,100 artists. One of the first outcomes from the research was the replication of known painting styles.

AI created more than 100,000 pieces of music after analyzing Irish and English folk tunes

A machine learning system overseen by a researcher at KTH Royal Institute of Technology has produced 100,000 new folk tunes to date, generating a diverse range of reactions from folk musicians and the public. Some of the music can even be heard on a newly-released album by an Irish folk group. Bob Sturm, associate professor of computer science in the Department of Speech, Music and Hearing, says that the main idea of the project was to train computer models on folk music, so that they appear to have some musical intelligence, and then to "devise methods to unravel what they are actually doing," he says. "Our work with many collaborators, such as composer Oded Ben-Tal at Kingston University in the UK, and professional musicians, has also shown how the models can serve a wider purpose: as useful partners in creating new music," Sturm says.

Killing comes in degrees of intimacy. At one extreme there is the example of Freddie Oversteegen, a hero of the Dutch resistance, who as a 14-year-old-girl used to pick up German soldiers and collaborators in bars, lure them into the woods, and once in a secluded spot shoot them dead. Long after the war, she told an interviewer that when seeing a man she had just shot fall, "you want to help them to get up". At the far extreme, perhaps, were the crew of Enola Gay, who killed 80,000 civilians with one bomb, dropped on Hiroshima from miles above. Drone pilots are even safer and further from their victims than high-altitude bombers.


The world's most prolific writer is a Chinese algorithm

Load up the homepage for e-commerce giant, Alibaba – a wholesale shopping site that's more or less China's answer to eBay – and you'll find images and descriptions of anything you could wish to buy, from kitchen sinks to luxury yachts. Every item has a short headline, but most are little more than lists of keywords: hand-picked search terms to ensure this USB phone charger or that pair of flame-resistant overalls float to the top in a sea of thousands upon thousands of similar items. It sounds simple, but there's an art to this copywriting. Yet Alibaba recently revealed that it is training an artificial intelligence to generate these item descriptions automatically – and they're not the only ones. Over the last few decades AIs have been taught to compose music, paint pictures and write (bad) poems. "Generative bots are the new chatbot," says Jun Wang at University College London.


Inferring geometric constraints in human demonstrations

This paper presents an approach for inferring geometric constraints in human demonstrations. In our method, geometric constraint models are built to create representations of kinematic constraints such as fixed point, axial rotation, prismatic motion, planar motion and others across multiple degrees of freedom. Our method infers geometric constraints using both kinematic and force/torque information. The approach first fits all the constraint models using kinematic information and evaluates them individually using position, force and moment criteria. Our approach does not require information about the constraint type or contact geometry; it can determine both simultaneously. We present experimental evaluations using instrumented tongs that show how constraints can be robustly inferred in recordings of human demonstrations.
