An Overview of Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Regulations

#artificialintelligence

In the past 18 months, we have seen a huge rise in the interest of AI development and activation. Countries are developing national strategies, and companies are positioning themselves for the fourth industrial revolution. With this pervasive push of AI, comes also an increased awareness that AIs should act in the interest of a human - and this is not as trivial as one might think. This article provides an overview of several key initiatives that propose ways on approaching AI ethics, regulation and sustainability. As this is a fast evolving field, I aim to update this article regularly.

How to Use IoT Datasets in #AI Applications

#artificialintelligence

Recently, google launched a Dataset search – which is a great resource to find Datasets. In this post, I list some IoT datasets which can be used for Machine Learning or Deep Learning applications. But finding datasets is only part of the story. A static dataset for IoT is not enough i.e. some of the interesting analysis is in streaming mode. To create an end to end streaming implementation from a given dataset, we need knowledge of full stack skills.

A ladder-climbing robotic snake

#artificialintelligence

At the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) held in Madrid earlier this month, researchers presented a flexible snake-like robot that is able to climb ladders. The project was a collaboration between Kyoto University and the University of Electro-Communications in Japan. A newly developed gait allows the robot snake to bend and twist its smooth body to create a series of connected shapes, which slowly but securely wrap around each rung as it climbs upwards. This breakthrough could be helpful in disaster recovery situations – enabling rescuers to access damaged buildings and other infrastructure more easily, navigating obstacles or terrain that even human-like robots might have trouble with. The snake is able to climb ladders that are both inclined and fully vertical.

Banking on artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the latest in a long line of technologies to play a part in the digital transformation of the financial services industry. The potential of this technology is vast: it can cut costs, provide human and systemic efficiencies, boost customer experience, promote loyalty and boost returns. According to business research firm Gartner, the two key components of AI – machine learning and deep learning – will be adopted as the norm within the next two to five years. There is real impetus and enthusiasm for organisations to adopt these technologies. Andy Pardoe, principal director of AI at Accenture Digital UK&I, says: "AI can be used across the entire value chain, from first contact with a potential new customer all the way to providing additional services to long-term customers. This is happening across the front, middle and back office functions."

#artificialintelligence

It seems artificial intelligence (AI) is the way to go for businesses and corporate. Going by a recent study, as many as 90 per cent of executives feel AI will have a positive impact on their company's growth. The findings are a part of the study entitled, "Intelligent Economies: AI's Transformation of Industries and Society, that explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) on markets and societies across the developed and developing worlds. The study, conducted by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and sponsored by Microsoft, surveyed more than 400 senior executives from various industries, including financial services, healthcare and life sciences, manufacturing, retail and the public sector. The survey was conducted in eight markets: France, Germany, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, Thailand, the UK and the US.

These charts show how pumped up HR departments are about AI -- even if many of them are still relying on paper documents

#artificialintelligence

Many corporate human resources departments are such technological backwaters that they still rely on Excel spreadsheets or even paper documents for many of their tasks or services. But the vast majority of HR departments expect to make a quantum leap in their IT systems in just the next two years, with many of them embracing artificial intelligence to help with their functions, according to a new study from consulting firm Bain. "HR departments are rapidly adopting new technologies," Michael Heric, a partner with Bain's Performance Improvement practice, said in the report. It warned, though, that "the appetite of HR leaders for more digital tools may outpace their ability to absorb the tools." For its survey, Bain polled human resource executives and managers at 500 large companies in the US, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Towards Formal Definitions of Blameworthiness, Intention, and Moral Responsibility

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We provide formal definitions of degree of blameworthiness and intention relative to an epistemic state (a probability over causal models and a utility function on outcomes). These, together with a definition of actual causality, provide the key ingredients for moral responsibility judgments. We show that these definitions give insight into commonsense intuitions in a variety of puzzling cases from the literature.
