History is rife with fakes. In 1983, the German magazine Stern announced that it had acquired previously undocumented diaries written by Hitler, a find British historian Hugh Trevor-Roper initially heralded as "an archive of great historical significance." In reality, however, an illustrator named Konrad Kujau had penned the volumes himself. Thanks to the scrutiny of historians at the German Federal Archive, they were soon revealed to be forgeries and the so-called "Hitler Diaries" became a cautionary tale about media frenzies. Imagine, however, if experts couldn't readily identify the diaries as fraudulent.

Seven members of a gang which used drones to fly more than £500,000 worth of drugs into prisons have been jailed. The gang was responsible for 55 drone deliveries into prisons around the country between April 2016 and June 2017. Police described the drone conspiracy as the "biggest ever seen" in the UK. The men were sentenced for between three and 10 years and six other gang members were given suspended sentences at Birmingham Crown Court earlier. The gang flew an estimated £550,000 worth of drugs - mainly cannabis and synthetic cannabis - along with amphetamines, crack cocaine and heroin to inmates' windows, West Midlands Police said.

From my Northern Irish vantage point, I coordinate and facilitate a collaborative network around AI. Our 30 members range from micro SMEs through to multinational organisations, such as Liberty IT and Allstate. As such, I am privy to an incredible range of AI based applications and solutions that are coming down the line, and I am always surprised at the pace of change in the industry. With every change, we need to take a few steps back and rethink how to frame the state of the art at that given time – so it's worth keeping in mind that what is state of the art at any given time may well be seen as mundane in just a few short months. For example, when the age of the AI personal assistant arrived with Google Assistant, Siri and Cortana, my framing focussed on trying to communicate that AI was no longer an abstract concept, but part of our everyday lives; albeit in a relatively limited manner. But it was only with the arrival of Amazon Alexa that many people were spending real money to own what is ultimately an AI product. Well… today things feel different again.

Chinese scientists and clinicians have developed a learning artificial intelligence system which can diagnose and identify cancerous prostate samples as accurately as any pathologist. This holds out the possibility of streamlining and eliminating variation in the process of cancer diagnosis. It may also help overcome any local shortage of trained pathologists. In the longer term it may lead to automated or partially-automated prostate cancer diagnosis. Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer, with around 1.1m diagnoses ever year, worldwide1 (for comparison, that's around x4 the number of men who live in Copenhagen).

We have entered an extraordinary age of transparency. For the first time in history, shareholders, customers, employees, and society as a whole are demanding that businesses make themselves 100% visible. The outside world is now seeking an open window into every aspect of operations, such as financial data, employee grievances, email communication, #MeToo scandals, and more. Included on that long and growing list is ESG--a company's environmental, social, and governance policies. And almost every piece of that information is available online to anyone who knows how and where to look. For investors, this shift to transparency has significant implications.

Information-rich representations of text often decrease sample complexity when an natural language processing (NLP) system is trained on a task. One effective way of producing such representations is the traditional NLP pipeline: tokenization, tagging, parsing etc. An alternative are so-called embeddings that represent text in a high-dimensional real-valued space that is smooth and thereby supports generalization. Most commonly, words are represented as embeddings, but more recently contextualized embeddings like ELMo have been proposed. I will address two challenges for embeddings in this talk.
