BBC News

A Ukrainian soldier has described the moment a passenger train was targeted by Russian drones, killing five people. When a carriage on the train was hit in northeastern Ukraine, passengers threw themselves on the floor in panic and the military officer told them to get out immediately. Without his instruction, issued moments before the carriage burst into flames, many more passengers could have died. The officer, whose army call-sign is Omar, is part of Ukraine's 93rd brigade. Russia infiltrates Pokrovsk with new tactics that test Ukraine's drones

Al Jazeera

Is Trump losing patience with Putin? Will sanctions against Russian oil giants hurt Putin? Russian forces have spread rapidly through Pokrovsk, the city in Ukraine's east where the warring sides have concentrated their manpower and tactical ingenuity during the past week, in what may be a final culmination of a 21-month battle. Geolocated footage placed Russian troops in central, northern and northeastern Pokrovsk, said the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington-based think tank. It set its sights on the city almost two years ago, after capturing Avdiivka, 39km (24 miles) to the east.

Zelensky visits troops near embattled front line town of Pokrovsk

BBC News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he has visited troops near the town of Pokrovsk, where the fiercest front line battle between Russia and Ukraine is currently taking place. Zelensky posted photos showing him meeting personnel at a command post in the Dobropillya sector, some 20km (12 miles) north of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. Kyiv's top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskiy, said on Monday that Ukraine was increasing pressure on the Dobropillya front to force the enemy to disperse its forces and make it impossible to concentrate their main efforts in the Pokrovsk area. Russia has been trying to seize Pokrovsk - a strategic frontline town and logistic hub - for over a year. Although it has taken them months to approach the town's borders, Russian soldiers have now infiltrated it and on Friday, Zelensky said Russia had amassed 170,000 troops on its outskirts.

Russia's Ministry of Defence said its forces took control of the villages of Krasnohirske in Ukraine's Zaporizhia region and Sadove in the Kharkiv region, Russian state news agencies reported.

Russian forces gain foothold in strategic Ukrainian town

BBC News

Russian troops are making a concerted push in eastern Ukraine and have gained a foothold in the strategic hub of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says. Moscow's soldiers outnumber Kyiv's 8-1 in the area and Ukraine cannot match that, Zelensky added while insisting Russia had not yet achieved the planned result. Russia has been trying to capture Pokrovsk for two years. The key supply and transport hub provides supplies and reinforcements to the eastern front - and it would get Moscow closer to occupying the entirety of the Donetsk region. It would also put towns of the heavily fortified fortress belt - Kramatorsk, Slovyansk, Kostyantynivka and Druzhkivka - within easier reach of Moscow.

Russian drone kills two Ukrainian journalists on Donetsk eastern front line

Al Jazeera

How much of Europe's oil still comes from Russia? A Russian drone has killed two Ukrainian journalists and wounded another in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, according to their outlet and the regional governor of the Donetsk region. Freedom Media, a state-funded news organisation, said on Thursday that Olena Gramova, 43, and Yevgen Karmazin, 33, had been killed by a Russian Lancet drone while in their car at a petrol station in the industrial city. Another reporter, Alexander Kolychev, was hospitalised after the attack. Freedom Media said that Gramova, a native of Yenakiieve in the Donetsk region, had originally trained as a "finance specialist", but turned to journalism in 2014, the year when Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula, and started arming a separatist movement in Donetsk and Luhansk in the Donbas.

Russia kills six in drone, missile strikes on Ukraine's Kyiv: Zelenskyy

Al Jazeera

A Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine's capital has killed at least six people, including a six-year-old boy, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials. The overnight attack wounded at least 52 people and caused damage at 27 locations across four districts of Kyiv, city military administrator Tymur Tkachenko said on Thursday as casualty numbers are expected to rise. Rescue teams were at the scene to search for people trapped under the rubble. Russia's latest deadly attack on Ukraine came after United States President Donald Trump on Monday issued a 10- or 12-day ultimatum to Moscow to halt its invasion of Ukraine, now in its fourth year, or face sanctions. Zelenskyy said on Thursday that Russia had used more than 300 drones and eight missiles in the attack as he posted a video of burning ruins on social media.
