At least five killed in Russian air attacks on Ukraine

Al Jazeera

Is the war entering a new phase? At least five people have been killed and 11 others injured in Russian attacks on Ukraine, authorities said. A Russian drone attack on a bus in the front-line city of Kherson killed at least four people and wounded four others on Wednesday, Kherson regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said. In a post on the Telegram app, Prokudin said the wounded had been taken to hospital. He posted blurred photos of a yellow bus with bloodied steps and shattered windows. Russian forces regularly strike Kherson, which was under Moscow's control from March to November 2022 - the initial months of the war - with drones, in what Ukraine says is the deliberate targeting of civilians.

In Voronezh, in southern Russia, warehouses belonging to the online retailer, Wildberries, were hit by Ukraine. The company, known as Russia's Amazon, has been repeatedly targeted in recent weeks. The attacks come a day after at least 13 people were killed, including one child, in Ukrainian drone strikes on the Russian republic of Tatarstan, more than 1,100 km (680 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Russian attacks have left thousands without power in Ukraine, while a drone attack killed two people in Russia, as United States-led peace talks on ending the war, deep in its fourth year, press on. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Russian night-time attacks damaged more than a dozen civilian facilities, disrupting power in seven regions. "They still aim to destroy our state and inflict maximum pain on our people." Kyiv and its Western allies have repeatedly said Russia is trying to cripple the Ukrainian power grid and deny civilians access to heat, light and running water for a fourth consecutive winter, in what Ukrainian officials call "weaponising" the cold. Russian attacks left parts of the Kherson region, including the regional capital, Kherson, without power, according to regional head Oleksandr Prokudin.

It set its sights on the city almost two years ago, after capturing Avdiivka, 39km (24 miles) to the east.
