Boeing to trial turbulence-detecting lasers

Daily Mail - Science & tech

But turbulence could be a thing of the past thanks to new technology that promises to predict the type that lurks unseen - and steer planes around it. That's according to Boeing, which will be trialing remote-sensing technology that can detect clear-air turbulence early next year. The concept, which they hope could be rolled-out across all commercial carriers, comes from a seven-tear collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and has huge potential for travellers. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the number of turbulence-related injuries doubled in 2016, from 21 to 44. But this could be slashed by lidar (light detection and ranging technology), which will work by emitting pulses of laser light from the plane's nose, scattering small dust and other particulates.

Nazi code machine sold

FOX News

It was a world-class stroke of good luck. An antique "typewriter" snapped up by an eagle-eyed expert in Romania for about $114 at a flea market turned out to be a rare Nazi Enigma cipher machine, CNN reports. The German Wehrmacht Enigma I sold for $51,500 to an anonymous bidder at an auction in Bucharest on Tuesday. During World War II, the German military used the machine to encrypt and decrypt sensitive messages. Depicted in the 2014 movie Imitation Game, dogged English cryptologists at Bletchley Park cracked the code, which the Germans believed unbreakable.

Bought for €100, World War II Enigma machine fetches €45,000 at auction

The Japan Times

BUCHAREST – Someone in Romania thought he'd made a fair amount of money when he sold an old typewriter for €100 ($115) at a flea market. The "typewriter" was, in fact, a German Wehrmacht Enigma I, a World War II cipher machine, and the collector who bought it put it up for sale at the Bucharest auction house Artmark with a starting price of €9,000. On Tuesday, Artmark sold it to an online bidder for €45,000. "The collector bought it from a flea market. He's a cryptography professor and … he knew very well what he was buying," said Cristian Gavrila, the collectible consignment manager at Artmark.

This startup's 'software robots' are taking the jobs of low-skilled office workers ZDNet

#artificialintelligence

Software robots can perform human tasks, such as reading screens, saving email attachments, and importing info into a company's database. The $30m raised last week by UiPath, which builds apps to automate repetitive office work, is the largest investment a Romanian startup has ever received. Its tools are used by leading companies working in financial services, insurance, and healthcare, and each software robot license can replace up to five low-skilled full-time human employees, UiPath says. New robotic process automation tools can take over mundane data entry and other process tasks for your IT team. The firm's software robots mimic human users.

Are public services ready to exploit artificial intelligence?

#artificialintelligence

Governments are already using data and analytics in a number of ways to help them become better informed and provide superior services for their citizens. For both central and local governments, an increasing number of back end processing and citizen engagement opportunities are emerging for smart use of artificial intelligence and its many subfields. The biggest area for potential quick wins will be the vast processing that occurs in various administration tasks. This includes improving awareness of patterns in data, to create new theses and models. Bringing together data from different areas and using algorithms that learn, can create new insights.
