WTNN: Weibull-Tailored Neural Networks for survival analysis

The Weibull distribution is a commonly adopted choice for modeling the survival of systems subject to maintenance over time. When only proxy indicators and censored observations are available, it becomes necessary to express the distribution's parameters as functions of time-dependent covariates. Deep neural networks provide the flexibility needed to learn complex relationships between these covariates and operational lifetime, thereby extending the capabilities of traditional regression-based models. Motivated by the analysis of a fleet of military vehicles operating in highly variable and demanding environments, as well as by the limitations observed in existing methodologies, this paper introduces WTNN, a new neural network-based modeling framework specifically designed for Weibull survival studies. The proposed architecture is specifically designed to incorporate qualitative prior knowledge regarding the most influential covariates, in a manner consistent with the shape and structure of the Weibull distribution. Through numerical experiments, we show that this approach can be reliably trained on proxy and right-censored data, and is capable of producing robust and interpretable survival predictions that can improve existing approaches.
Simulation to Reality: Testbeds and Architectures for Connected and Automated Vehicles

Ensuring the safe and efficient operation of CAVs relies heavily on the software framework used. A software framework needs to ensure real-time properties, reliable communication, and efficient resource utilization. Furthermore, a software framework needs to enable seamless transition between testing stages, from simulation to small-scale to full-scale experiments. In this paper, we survey prominent software frameworks used for in-vehicle and inter-vehicle communication in CAVs. We analyze these frameworks regarding opportunities and challenges, such as their real-time properties and transitioning capabilities. Additionally, we delve into the tooling requirements necessary for addressing the associated challenges. We illustrate the practical implications of these challenges through case studies focusing on critical areas such as perception, motion planning, and control. Furthermore, we identify research gaps in the field, highlighting areas where further investigation is needed to advance the development and deployment of safe and efficient CAV systems.
MB-ORES: A Multi-Branch Object Reasoner for Visual Grounding in Remote Sensing

We propose a unified framework that integrates object detection (OD) and visual grounding (VG) for remote sensing (RS) imagery. To support conventional OD and establish an intuitive prior for VG task, we fine-tune an open-set object detector using referring expression data, framing it as a partially supervised OD task. In the first stage, we construct a graph representation of each image, comprising object queries, class embeddings, and proposal locations. Then, our task-aware architecture processes this graph to perform the VG task. The model consists of: (i) a multi-branch network that integrates spatial, visual, and categorical features to generate task-aware proposals, and (ii) an object reasoning network that assigns probabilities across proposals, followed by a soft selection mechanism for final referring object localization. Our model demonstrates superior performance on the OPT-RSVG and DIOR-RSVG datasets, achieving significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods while retaining classical OD capabilities. ModiGen: A Large Language Model-Based Workflow for Multi-Task Modelica Code Generation

Modelica is a widely adopted language for simulating complex physical systems, yet effective model creation and optimization require substantial domain expertise. Although large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated promising capabilities in code generation, their application to modeling remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we have developed benchmark datasets specifically designed to evaluate the performance of LLMs in generating Modelica component models and test cases. Our evaluation reveals substantial limitations in current LLMs, as the generated code often fails to simulate successfully. To overcome these challenges, we propose a specialized workflow that integrates supervised fine-tuning, graph retrieval-augmented generation, and feedback optimization to improve the accuracy and reliability of Modelica code generation. The evaluation results demonstrate significant performance gains: the maximum improvement in pass@1 reached 0.3349 for the component generation task and 0.2457 for the test case generation task. This research underscores the potential of LLMs to advance intelligent modeling tools and offers valuable insights for future developments in system modeling and engineering applications.
Toward Zero-Shot User Intent Recognition in Shared Autonomy

A fundamental challenge of shared autonomy is to use high-DoF robots to assist, rather than hinder, humans by first inferring user intent and then empowering the user to achieve their intent. Although successful, prior methods either rely heavily on a priori knowledge of all possible human intents or require many demonstrations and interactions with the human to learn these intents before being able to assist the user. We propose and study a zero-shot, vision-only shared autonomy (VOSA) framework designed to allow robots to use end-effector vision to estimate zero-shot human intents in conjunction with blended control to help humans accomplish manipulation tasks with unknown and dynamically changing object locations. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our VOSA framework, we instantiate a simple version of VOSA on a Kinova Gen3 manipulator and evaluate our system by conducting a user study on three tabletop manipulation tasks. The performance of VOSA matches that of an oracle baseline model that receives privileged knowledge of possible human intents while also requiring significantly less effort than unassisted teleoperation. In more realistic settings, where the set of possible human intents is fully or partially unknown, we demonstrate that VOSA requires less human effort and time than baseline approaches while being preferred by a majority of the participants. Our results demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of using off-the-shelf vision algorithms to enable flexible and beneficial shared control of a robot manipulator. Manual Verbalizer Enrichment for Few-Shot Text Classification

With the continuous development of pre-trained language models, prompt-based training becomes a well-adopted paradigm that drastically improves the exploitation of models for many natural language processing tasks. Prompting also shows great performance compared to traditional fine-tuning when adapted to zero-shot or few-shot scenarios where the number of annotated data is limited. In this framework, the role of verbalizers is essential, as an interpretation from masked word distributions into output predictions. In this work, we propose \acrshort{mave}, an approach for verbalizer construction by enrichment of class labels using neighborhood relation in the embedding space of words for the text classification task. In addition, we elaborate a benchmarking procedure to evaluate typical baselines of verbalizers for document classification in few-shot learning contexts. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results while using significantly fewer resources. We show that our approach is particularly effective in cases with extremely limited supervision data.
Evaluating the Efficacy of Instance Incremental vs. Batch Learning in Delayed Label Environments: An Empirical Study on Tabular Data Streaming for Fraud Detection

Real-world tabular learning production scenarios typically involve evolving data streams, where data arrives continuously and its distribution may change over time. In such a setting, most studies in the literature regarding supervised learning favor the use of instance incremental algorithms due to their ability to adapt to changes in the data distribution. Another significant reason for choosing these algorithms is \textit{avoid storing observations in memory} as commonly done in batch incremental settings. However, the design of instance incremental algorithms often assumes immediate availability of labels, which is an optimistic assumption. In many real-world scenarios, such as fraud detection or credit scoring, labels may be delayed. Consequently, batch incremental algorithms are widely used in many real-world tasks. This raises an important question: "In delayed settings, is instance incremental learning the best option regarding predictive performance and computational efficiency?" Unfortunately, this question has not been studied in depth, probably due to the scarcity of real datasets containing delayed information. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive empirical evaluation and analysis of this question using a real-world fraud detection problem and commonly used generated datasets. Our findings indicate that instance incremental learning is not the superior option, considering on one side state-of-the-art models such as Adaptive Random Forest (ARF) and other side batch learning models such as XGBoost. Adaptative Context Normalization: A Boost for Deep Learning in Image Processing

Deep Neural network learning for image processing faces major challenges related to changes in distribution across layers, which disrupt model convergence and performance. Activation normalization methods, such as Batch Normalization (BN), have revolutionized this field, but they rely on the simplified assumption that data distribution can be modelled by a single Gaussian distribution. To overcome these limitations, Mixture Normalization (MN) introduced an approach based on a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), assuming multiple components to model the data. However, this method entails substantial computational requirements associated with the use of Expectation-Maximization algorithm to estimate parameters of each Gaussian components. To address this issue, we introduce Adaptative Context Normalization (ACN), a novel supervised approach that introduces the concept of "context", which groups together a set of data with similar characteristics. Data belonging to the same context are normalized using the same parameters, enabling local representation based on contexts. For each context, the normalized parameters, as the model weights are learned during the backpropagation phase. ACN not only ensures speed, convergence, and superior performance compared to BN and MN but also presents a fresh perspective that underscores its particular efficacy in the field of image processing.
Unsupervised Adaptive Normalization

Deep neural networks have become a staple in solving intricate problems, proving their mettle in a wide array of applications. However, their training process is often hampered by shifting activation distributions during backpropagation, resulting in unstable gradients. Batch Normalization (BN) addresses this issue by normalizing activations, which allows for the use of higher learning rates. Despite its benefits, BN is not without drawbacks, including its dependence on mini-batch size and the presumption of a uniform distribution of samples. To overcome this, several alternatives have been proposed, such as Layer Normalization, Group Normalization, and Mixture Normalization. These methods may still struggle to adapt to the dynamic distributions of neuron activations during the learning process. To bridge this gap, we introduce Unsupervised Adaptive Normalization (UAN), an innovative algorithm that seamlessly integrates clustering for normalization with deep neural network learning in a singular process. UAN executes clustering using the Gaussian mixture model, determining parameters for each identified cluster, by normalizing neuron activations. These parameters are concurrently updated as weights in the deep neural network, aligning with the specific requirements of the target task during backpropagation. This unified approach of clustering and normalization, underpinned by neuron activation normalization, fosters an adaptive data representation that is specifically tailored to the target task. This adaptive feature of UAN enhances gradient stability, resulting in faster learning and augmented neural network performance. UAN outperforms the classical methods by adapting to the target task and is effective in classification, and domain adaptation.
A methodological framework for Resilience as a Service (RaaS) in multimodal urban transportation networks

Public transportation systems are experiencing an increase in commuter traffic. This increase underscores the need for resilience strategies to manage unexpected service disruptions, ensuring rapid and effective responses that minimize adverse effects on stakeholders and enhance the system's ability to maintain essential functions and recover quickly. This study aims to explore the management of public transport disruptions through resilience as a service (RaaS) strategies, developing an optimization model to effectively allocate resources and minimize the cost for operators and passengers. The proposed model includes multiple transportation options, such as buses, taxis, and automated vans, and evaluates them as bridging alternatives to rail-disrupted services based on factors such as their availability, capacity, speed, and proximity to the disrupted station. This ensures that the most suitable vehicles are deployed to maintain service continuity. Applied to a case study in the Ile de France region, Paris and suburbs, complemented by a microscopic simulation, the model is compared to existing solutions such as bus bridging and reserve fleets. The results highlight the model's performance in minimizing costs and enhancing stakeholder satisfaction, optimizing transport management during disruptions.
