UK's sweeping asylum law changes: How will they impact refugees?
UK's sweeping asylum law changes: How will they impact refugees? Shabana Mahmood, the United Kingdom's home secretary, has said the country's asylum system is "not working" and is placing "intense strain on communities" ahead of proposals for major government reforms that would end refugees' automatic right to settle permanently in the UK. Speaking to the BBC on Sunday, Mahmood said undocumented migration is "tearing the country apart". First, they would end the automatic path to settled status for refugees after five years. And second, they would remove state benefits from those who have the right to work and can support themselves.
How Google's DeepMind tool is 'more quickly' forecasting hurricane behavior
How Google's DeepMind tool is'more quickly' forecasting hurricane behavior'Less expensive and time consuming' model helps with fast and accurate predictions, possibly saving lives and property When then Tropical Storm Melissa was churning south of Haiti, Philippe Papin, a National Hurricane Center (NHC) meteorologist, had confidence it was about to grow into a monster hurricane. As the lead forecaster on duty, he predicted that in just 24 hours the storm would become a category 4 hurricane and begin a turn towards the coast of Jamaica. No NHC forecaster had ever issued such a bold forecast for rapid strengthening. But Papin had an ace up his sleeve: artificial intelligence in the form of Google's new DeepMind hurricane model - released for the first time in June. And, as predicted, Melissa did become a storm of astonishing strength that tore through Jamaica.

The Hidden Math of Ocean Waves
The math behind even the simplest ocean waves is notoriously uncooperative. A team of Italian mathematicians has made major advances toward understanding it. The best perk of Alberto Maspero's job, he says, is the view from his window. Situated on a hill above the ancient port city of Trieste, Italy, his office at the International School for Advanced Studies overlooks a broad bay at the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea. "It's very inspiring," the mathematician said. "For sure the most beautiful view I've ever had." When the bora is strong enough, it drives the waves into reverse. But they never actually get there.
Russia infiltrates Pokrovsk with new tactics that test Ukraine's drones
Is Trump losing patience with Putin? Will sanctions against Russian oil giants hurt Putin? Russian forces have spread rapidly through Pokrovsk, the city in Ukraine's east where the warring sides have concentrated their manpower and tactical ingenuity during the past week, in what may be a final culmination of a 21-month battle. Geolocated footage placed Russian troops in central, northern and northeastern Pokrovsk, said the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington-based think tank. It set its sights on the city almost two years ago, after capturing Avdiivka, 39km (24 miles) to the east.
Centuries of Black Death misinformation started with a poem
A 14th century trickster tale was misread as fact. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Misinformation surrounding COVID-19 is still a major problem more than five years after its emergence. Zelensky visits troops near embattled front line town of Pokrovsk
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he has visited troops near the town of Pokrovsk, where the fiercest front line battle between Russia and Ukraine is currently taking place. Zelensky posted photos showing him meeting personnel at a command post in the Dobropillya sector, some 20km (12 miles) north of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. Kyiv's top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskiy, said on Monday that Ukraine was increasing pressure on the Dobropillya front to force the enemy to disperse its forces and make it impossible to concentrate their main efforts in the Pokrovsk area. Russia has been trying to seize Pokrovsk - a strategic frontline town and logistic hub - for over a year. Although it has taken them months to approach the town's borders, Russian soldiers have now infiltrated it and on Friday, Zelensky said Russia had amassed 170,000 troops on its outskirts.
