Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,162

Al Jazeera

Russian drones attacked Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa early on Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring five, the regional governor said. The attack sparked fires and damaged residential dwellings and infrastructure. In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city in the northeast, the mayor said another Russian drone had struck a petrol station in the city centre, triggering a fire. Ukraine's SBU security agency claimed responsibility for a drone strike on a defence manufacturing facility in Russia. The strike on Murom Instrument-Building Plant, 300km (186 miles) east of Moscow, sparked a fire and damaged two buildings, the region's governor reported.

Bafta games awards 2025: full list of winners

The Guardian

In a video game year dominated by dark, bloody fantasy adventures โ€“ and continued job losses and studio closures โ€“ it was a cute robot that stole the night at the 2025 Bafta video game awards. Sony's family-friendly platformer Astro Bot won in five categories at yesterday evening's ceremony, including best game and game design. The rest of the awards were evenly spread across a range of Triple A and independent titles. Oil rig thriller Still Wakes the Deep was the next biggest winner with three awards: new intellectual property, performer in a leading role and performer in a supporting role. Clearly actors looking for Bafta-winning roles need look no further than the North Sea.

New 3D scans of Titanic reveal doomed final hours: Incredible full-sized digital scan shows how the ship was dramatically ripped in two as it sank after hitting an iceberg in 1912

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. More than 1,500 people died when the ship, which was carrying 2,224 passengers and crew, sank under the command of Captain Edward Smith. Some of the wealthiest people in the world were on board, including property tycoon John Jacob Astor IV, great grandson of John Jacob Astor, founder of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim, heir to his family's mining business, also perished, along with Isidor Straus, the German-born co-owner of Macy's department store. The ship was the largest afloat at the time and was designed in such a way that it was meant to be'unsinkable'.

FLP-XR: Future Location Prediction on Extreme Scale Maritime Data in Real-time

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Movements of maritime vessels are inherently complex and challenging to model due to the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of maritime operations. Even within structured maritime environments, such as shipping lanes and port approaches, where vessels adhere to navigational rules and predefined sea routes, uncovering underlying patterns is far from trivial. The necessity for accurate modeling of the mobility of maritime vessels arises from the numerous applications it serves, including risk assessment for collision avoidance, optimization of shipping routes, and efficient port management. This paper introduces FLP-XR, a model that leverages maritime mobility data to construct a robust framework that offers precise predictions while ensuring extremely fast training and inference capabilities. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach through an extensive experimental study using three real-world AIS datasets. According to the experimental results, FLP-XR outperforms the current state-of-the-art in many cases, whereas it performs 2-3 orders of magnitude faster in terms of training and inference.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,104

Al Jazeera

Ukraine's military said it destroyed 46 of 83 Russian drones launched at the country overnight. Another 31 drones were reportedly "lost" and failed to reach their targets. A drone attack on Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa damaged energy infrastructure in the area, triggering power and heat supply interruptions in the city, regional Governor Oleh Kiper wrote. Odesa's Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov said the attack knocked out three boiler plants. A Ukrainian drone attack targeted an industrial enterprise in Russia's southern city of Syzran, the governor of the Samara region said on Tuesday, adding that there were no casualties.

Reconstruction of muon bundles in KM3NeT detectors using machine learning methods

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The KM3NeT Collaboration is installing the ARCA and ORCA neutrino detectors at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The focus of ARCA is neutrino astronomy, while ORCA is optimised for neutrino oscillation studies. Both detectors are already operational in their intermediate states and collect valuable data, including the measurements of the muons produced by cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere. This work explores the potential of machine learning models for the reconstruction of muon bundles, which are multi-muon events. For this, data collected with intermediate detector configurations of ARCA and ORCA was used in addition to simulated data from the envisaged final configurations of those detectors. Prediction of the total number of muons in a bundle as well as their total energy and even the energy of the primary cosmic ray is presented.

Diving Deep: Forecasting Sea Surface Temperatures and Anomalies

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The challenge focused on the data-driven predictability of global sea surface temperatures (SSTs), a key factor in climate forecasting, ecosystem management, fisheries management, and climate change monitoring. The challenge involved forecasting SST anomalies (SSTAs) three months in advance using historical data and included a special task of predicting SSTAs nine months ahead for the Baltic Sea. Participants utilized various machine learning approaches to tackle the task, leveraging data from ERA5. This paper discusses the methodologies employed, the results obtained, and the lessons learned, offering insights into the future of climate-related predictive modeling.

Regional Ocean Forecasting with Hierarchical Graph Neural Networks

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Accurate ocean forecasting systems are vital for understanding marine dynamics, which play a crucial role in environmental management and climate adaptation strategies. Traditional numerical solvers, while effective, are computationally expensive and time-consuming. Recent advancements in machine learning have revolutionized weather forecasting, offering fast and energy-efficient alternatives. Building on these advancements, we introduce SeaCast, a neural network designed for high-resolution, medium-range ocean forecasting. SeaCast employs a graph-based framework to effectively handle the complex geometry of ocean grids and integrates external forcing data tailored to the regional ocean context. Our approach is validated through experiments at a high spatial resolution using the operational numerical model of the Mediterranean Sea provided by the Copernicus Marine Service, along with both numerical and data-driven atmospheric forcings.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 955

Al Jazeera

Russia unleashed an overnight drone attack across Ukraine targeting the capital Kyiv and hitting infrastructure in the Black Sea port of Odesa, Ukrainian officials said. The State Emergency Service said one person was injured and warehouses and cargo trucks damaged in Odesa during the multi-wave attack, which kept much of the country under air-raid alert for several hours. The Ukrainian Air Force said the Russian attack involved 87 attack drones and four missiles. Air defence units destroyed 56 of the drones and two of the missiles, the Air Force said. Anti-Kremlin activist Ildar Dadin, who was jailed in Russia for protesting against President Vladimir Putin, was killed on the front line in Ukraine where he was fighting alongside Kyiv's forces, his relatives and Russian media said.
