Google burning through cash with spiralling AI costs
Image caption, Google and its paranet company Alphabet have spent huge amounts on AI. Google parent Alphabet saw its business continue to grow in recent months, yet growing spending on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure put its leftover cash into negative territory. The company's free cash flow, the cash it maintained after paying for operations and investments, came in at negative $5.9bn (£4.3bn) for the first time in at least a decade, according to its past financial records. Alphabet's spending on AI is now expected to hit as much as $205bn this year, an increase from $190bn, as major tech companies race to build around a new wave of the technology. Meanwhile, Alphabet's combined quarterly revenue hit $119.8bn, up 23% compared with the same time last year. But the company's stock fell 4% in after hours trading.

Iran warns of regional turmoil if US threats and attacks do not stop
What is Iran's Pickaxe Mountain? The United States has launched a 12th continuous night of strikes against targets in Iran, as Tehran threatened to launch more of its own attacks across the Gulf region, warning that "no infrastructure will be safe" unless its own security is guaranteed. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Wednesday that it had launched the strikes "to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting regional waters". Iran has said that strikes in the Gulf will not stop if the US continues to attack and threaten Iran. Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf delivered the message in a post on X Wednesday, after US President Donald Trump threatened to attack more Iranian power plants and bridges.

U.S. and China to hold AI talks in September, sources say Talks between the United States and China on artificial intelligence are set to take place in September and be led on the U.S. side by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, sources have said. BEIJING - The United States and China will hold talks over artificial intelligence in September, five people familiar with the matter said, as the rival superpowers grapple with how to mitigate the risks posed by each other's increasingly powerful frontier models. The AI talks, a significant outcome of the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in May, will likely take place before Xi's planned Sept. 24 visit to the U.S., said the sources, who asked not to be named as the information is not public. The dates, however, have not been finalized, they said. As economic, political and military rivals, China and the U.S. have grown increasingly anxious over each other's AI capabilities amid an accelerating global AI race. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
