When you blow air across the neck of a bottle, you're not just producing a pleasant tone: you're also demonstrating a phenomenon called Helmholtz resonance. This occurs when airflow passing across an opening causes air trapped inside a cavity (like a glass bottle) to oscillate back and forth. At certain frequencies, these oscillations become much stronger, producing the familiar humming sound. Now, researchers in the MicroBioRobotic Systems ( MICROBS) Lab in EPFL's School of Engineering have harnessed the physics behind this phenomenon to build hollow structures that act as miniature, sound-powered machines. The recall, which includes 2.98 million Chinese-made Teslas, follows safety concerns that the hidden door handles are difficult to locate and open in emergency situations. Other brands affected by the recall include Chinese carmakers XPeng, Xiaomi and Geely. Made popular by multi-billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla, hidden door handles are designed to tuck seamlessly within the car's door panel and only extend outwards when the owner approaches their vehicle. The design came under scrutiny after two fatal crashes in China involving Xiaomi EVs, in which power failures were suspected to have prevented doors from being opened.

During the second annual World Humanoid Robot Games that kicked off in Beijing on Saturday, the Tiangong Ultra humanoid robot completed the 100-meter dash in 9.39 seconds during a preliminary heat. Developed by Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, the record-holding robot overtook Honor's Lightning robot, which completed the sprint in 9.47 seconds. Despite the impressive finish times, don't expect these humanoid robots to be used for any commercial purposes yet. After their sprints, they slammed directly into pads and some even required human assistance to be stretchered off the course.
