Passenger drone gets permission for US flight tests

Engadget

Don't be surprised if you see a very large, very unusual drone flying through Nevada's skies. The state's Institute for Autonomous Systems has given China's EHang permission to test fly its passenger-toting 184 drone later this year. In addition to providing basic clearance, the move will also have the Institute create criteria that shows the airworthiness of the autonomous single-seater to the Federal Aviation Administration. It's not certain just where the 184 will fly, although it'll sometimes need restricted airspace. EHang won't just be flying in the empty desert, then.

Uber rolls out new perks for drivers

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Travis Kalanick, Founder and CEO of Uber, delivers a speech at the Institute of Directors Convention at the Royal Albert Hall, Central London, Britain, 03 October 2014. Uber may be increasing its testing of self-driving cars, but it still has plenty of work to do to keep its human drivers happy. The ride-sharing leader announced a host of new initiatives that are sure to please drivers, giving them more control over the rides they drive. The moves, which the company started rolling out this week, run the gamut in improving the Uber driving experience. One new feature allows Uber drivers to pause new requests from coming in while they are finishing a route, while a second lets drivers set a "driver destination," or letting a driver twice a day input where they want to go and matching them only with riders on that route.

Man Vs Machine: At Wipro, Artificial Intelligence Is About To Do The Job Of 3000 Engineers

#artificialintelligence

At least for the 3,000 software engineers whose tasks are about to be replaced by an artificial intelligence (AI) tool at Wipro. Mint's Varun Sood reports that Wipro is all set to use "Holmes," its artificial intelligence wizard to automate certain projects and this, in turn, will free up 3,000 engineers from "mundane" software maintenance jobs. This step is expected to save the company about 46.5 million as it tries to strengthen profitability in what is becoming an increasingly uncertain environment for outsourcing companies. Wipro also plans to sell this artificial intelligence tool to new and existing clients this year and earn anywhere between 60 million to 70 million, according to the report. The AI platform will be deployed at the company's'fixed-price' projects, which employ about 30,000 people.

The all-electric vehicle has four arms with a total of eight propellers at the end.

Pepper, the Emotional Robot, Learns How to Feel Like an American

WIRED

Pepper is about four feet tall, looks like a person (except for the wheels where its legs should be), and has more emotional intelligence than your average toddler. It uses facial recognition to pick up on sadness or hostility, voice recognition to hear concernโ€ฆand it's actually pretty good at all that. Over 7,000 Peppers greet guests, answer questions, and play with kids in Japanese homes. And by the end of the year it'll be on sale in the US--but not before software engineers here get a crack at remaking its soul. Softbank Robotics, Pepper's maker, knows that emotional interactions in the US won't look the same as they do in Japan.

Lenovo just signed a chip deal that points to a VR future

PCWorld

On the eve of its Tech World conference in San Francisco, Lenovo has signed a deal that will allow it to bring virtual reality to more of its products in the future. The deal allows Lenovo to use Movidius's Myriad 2 vision-processing chip in upcoming devices, bringing capabilities like head tracking, motion sensing, and image and gesture recognition to Lenovo products. Tech World takes place Thursday, and among other announcements Lenovo is expected to provide more details about its Project Tango smartphone, a product co-developed with Google that includes augmented reality features. Google uses Movidius technology in its own Project Tango development kit, which sells for US 512 including a tablet. It seems likely that Lenovo is using a Movidius chip in its own Project Tango smartphone, too.

May 2016: Scripts of the Week

#artificialintelligence

With several new datasets uploaded to Datasets this month, we saw a great number of exceptional scripts created. In this month's blog featuring the May 2016 Scripts of the Week, you'll hear about four that the team selected for their quality insight and analysis including: Read on and find yourself motivated to fork any of these scripts and explore the authors' ideas further! I was reviewing the data in the competition and feeling a bit stuck on how to approach it. I have a background in earth observation/remote sensing using satellite and aerial data, but the contest goals are pretty unusual in this contest and the imagery is different from what I prefer to work with (multi- or hyper-spectral imagery). Given that I didn't have a clear approach or purpose in mind, I decided to just explore the data iteratively as a brainstorming process.
