Understanding Innovation to Drive Sustainable Development

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Innovation is among the key factors driving a country's economic and social growth. But what are the factors that make a country innovative? How do they differ across different parts of the world and different stages of development? In this work done in collaboration with the World Economic Forum (WEF), we analyze the scores obtained through executive opinion surveys that constitute the WEF's Global Competitiveness Index in conjunction with other country-level metrics and indicators to identify actionable levers of innovation. The findings can help country leaders and organizations shape the policies to drive developmental activities and increase the capacity of innovation.

E3 2016 Game Trailers: Norman Reedus, 'Spider-Man,' 'Halo Wars 2' And So Much More

International Business Times

Despite the hardware news this week, E3 2016 is still all about the games. For gamers, that means a bounty of new trailers revealing gameplay and cinematic introductions to new worlds. Whether you're a fan of the PC, Xbox One or PlayStation, it's hard not to get excited about what's ahead. This may be the most buzzed-about trailer coming out of E3 2016. The first game from "Metal Gear Solid" creator Hideo Kojima after his departure from Konami was always going to be a big deal, but then you add some really interesting visuals and a naked Norman Reedus, better known as Daryl from "The Walking Dead," holding a baby and that's a recipe for success.

We Asked Sony's Gaming Chief About the Future of PlayStation

TIME - Tech

For PlayStation maker Sony, this year's E3 video game conference has been all about games. From a virtual reality Resident Evil to a surprise Spider-Man title, PlayStation gamers have plenty to look forward to in the coming months. TIME sat down with SIE Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden to talk about the future of PlayStation. What follows is a lightly edited transcript of our conversation. TIME: Sony came out this week and confirmed that a high-end PlayStation 4 is in the works.

Pepper the robot begins work in Belgian hospitals to treat patients

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Meet the future face of healthcare assistance - a friendly faced robot named Pepper. Its diction is still a little odd, and his movements sometimes a bit hesitant, but the robot is all geared up to help patients at two Belgian hospitals. The humanoid assistant, who has a screen on his chest and a round head, is the first robot in the world to be used to greet people in a medical setting, its software creators said. Two of Belgium's hospitals have installed Pepper robots in their receptions for trials. The robots will help patients in Ostend and Liege. In Liege, at the Centre Hospitalier Regional La Citadelle, the robot helper will remain in the hospital's reception area.

Microsoft keeps making this Xbox mistake: Pushing the platform, and not the games

PCWorld

Microsoft is committing the same sin today that it did with the launch of the Xbox One: The focus of a game console shouldn't be about the platform, but the games. Compare the first images shown off at Microsoft's press conference, and then at Sony's. Microsoft launched its new Xbox One S console in the first few seconds, while Sony (following a long introduction by an in-house orchestra) led off with an extended clip from the new God of War game. To its credit, I don't think Microsoft necessarily set out to make the Xbox One the focus of its E3 presentation. But by the end of it, we weren't talking about games like the creepily dystopian We Happy Few, but whether or not gamers should buy a slimmer Xbox One S or wait for the vastly more powerful Project Scorpio.

The Seven Days of A.I.

#artificialintelligence

Inspired by the biblical concept of the seven days of creation, our group sought to create a dystopian science-fiction retelling that put a spotlight on the possibility of AI evolving and eventually supplementing the role of God. Based on the assumption that artificial intelligence would learn at an exponential rate, we wanted to make sure that the actions taken by Deepmind would progressively escalate day after day. The fundamental distinction however was that Deepmind would not share the same sense of human empathy- something that led to its destructive actions in the later days. Overall, we let the readings discussed in class form the individual plot points of the specific days (automation, love & robots, fully automated luxury communism) whilst still taking certain creative freedoms. Additionally, a key point is that the seven days of creation may not be literal 24-hour days but a figurative expression which we then incorporated into our timeframe of events within our version of AI's seven days of existence.

What underwater robots might be able to tell us about India's monsoon

Christian Science Monitor | Science

Seven swimming robots will take to the sea later this month to help scientists investigate unanswered questions about India's monsoon season. After departing from the southern port city of Chennai, researchers will spend a month at sea releasing the torpedo-shaped underwater robots across a 400-kilometer (250-mi.) The robots, which will navigate to a depth of 1,000 meters, are programmed to transmit data measuring water salinity, temperature, and current via satellite. Lead researcher Adrian Matthews describes the Indian monsoon as "notoriously hard to predict." "It is a very complicated weather system and the processes are not understood or recorded in science," Dr. Matthews said in a press release.

The Road Ahead For AI in Cars EE Times

#artificialintelligence

The market research firm expects the attach rate of AI-based systems in new vehicles to increase from 8 percent in 2015 (the vast majority of today's AI systems in cars are focused on speech recognition) to 109% in 2025. IHS sees multiple AI systems of various types to be installed in many cars. In the human-machine interface in vehicles, IHS believes AI will play a role in speech and gesture recognition, eye-tracking, driver monitoring and natural language interfaces. In the autonomous car, AI will advance machine vision systems, while it will also migrate in sensor fusion engine control units (ECU). In a phone interview with EE Times, Luca De Ambroggi, principal analyst, automotive semiconductors at IHS told us, "AI is viewed as a key enabler for real autonomous vehicles. Everyone in the automotive supply chain is getting pretty bullish."

IEEE Xplore: IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI in Games - (About Journal)

#artificialintelligence

The IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI in Games (T-CIAIG) publishes archival journal quality original papers in computational intelligence and related areas in artificial intelligence applied to games, including but not limited to videogames, mathematical games, human–computer interactions in games, and games involving physical objects. Emphasis is placed on the use of these methods to improve performance in and understanding of the dynamics of games, as well as gaining insight into the properties of the methods as applied to games. It also includes using games as a platform for building intelligent embedded agents for the real world. Papers connecting games to all areas of computational intelligence and traditional AI are considered.

Will machines eventually take on every job?

#artificialintelligence

It's a booming time to be a truck driver. According to data NPR compiled from the US Census Bureau, truck driving is currently the most popular job in 29 states. It's not that truck driving is a particularly sought after career path, however. Rather, it is simply one that is available and pays decently. Unlike a plethora of other jobs that have declined in recent years, truck driving has remained immune to the forces that have elbowed out different lines of work.
