Twitter cracks down on trolling after racist and sexist campaign against Ghostbuster actor Leslie Jones

The Independent - Tech

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

Stitching a drone's view of the world into 3D maps as it flies

New Scientist

When you're buzzing through the air at 60 kilometres per hour, it can be hard to take in the view. But now drones can create highly detailed 3D maps as they fly, using just an ordinary video camera. The system, called Hydra Fusion and developed by researchers at Lockheed Martin in Canada, will make drones better at aerial surveillance. Hydra Fusion is based on a form of image-based mapping, or photogrammetry, known as "structure from motion". The procedure involves stitching together multiple images – in this case, consecutive frames of video footage – to form a detailed 3D map.

A tougher Turing Test shows that computers still have virtually no common sense

#artificialintelligence

Apple fixed this error shortly after its virtual assistant was first released in 2011. But a new contest shows that computers still lack the common sense required to avoid such embarrassing mix-ups. The results of the contest were presented at an academic conference in New York this week, and they provide some measure of how much work needs to be done to make computers truly intelligent. The Winograd Schema Challenge asks computers to make sense of sentences that are ambiguous but usually simple for humans to parse. Disambiguating Winograd Schema sentences requires some common-sense understanding.

Google uses AI to cut data centre energy use by 15%

#artificialintelligence

Google says it has cut its vast data centres' energy use by 15% by applying artificial intelligence to manage them more efficiently than humans. The servers that power billions of web searches, streamed films and social media accounts are estimated to account for around 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Google is believed to have one of the biggest fleets of them in the world. On Wednesday, Google said it had proved it could cut total energy use at its data centres by 15% by deploying machine learning from Deepmind, the British AI company it bought in 2014 for around 400m. Such centres require significant energy for cooling, as well as constant adjustments to air temperature, pressure and humidity, to run as efficiently as possible.

3 Important Factors That Will Completely Redefine Leadership

#artificialintelligence

Early in your career, you may be preoccupied with tactical managerial issues and have fewer opportunities to select your own team. One straightforward implication of career progression, however, is that you tend to move into more senior roles. This would naturally require you to be more focused on selecting, developing, and empowering the people whom you are leading. Mark Hurd, the co-CEO of Oracle, listed strategic talent development as "the number one issue for CEOs today." The Conference Board CEO Challenge report listed the focus on talent growth, training, development, engagement, and retention as the number one challenge for senior leaders.

DeNA, Yamato Transport to test self-driving delivery service

The Japan Times

DeNA Co. and Yamato Transport Co. announced Wednesday they plan to start trials on a delivery service that will utilize self-driving vehicles. The two firms aim to start testing what they envision turning into an on-demand delivery service in March 2017 in special deregulated zones designated by the government. They have yet to decide on a location. The distribution business will drastically change with the spread of self-driving vehicles, possibly creating more services, said DeNA CEO Isao Moriyasu. For example, packages could be delivered at all hours of the day given eventually there will be no need for a driver, which would also save on labor costs, he said.

Great Fire of London to be recreated in MINECRAFT: Virtual world will portray tragic blaze that swept the city 350 years ago

Daily Mail - Science & tech

From Big Ben to Battersea Power Station, London's landmarks have been painstakingly recreated using tiny virtual bricks in Minecraft. Now, one of the capital's most disastrous events – the Great Fire of London – is about to be put on the pixelated map. The historic blaze of 1666, which gutted the medieval part of the city 350 years ago, will be portrayed using three different maps within the video game. Mario Kart can make you a better driver as researchers find video games help awareness

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Spending hours playing video games instead of running around outside has been widely blamed as the cause of many problems among young people. But while it may prevent players from getting enough sleep or exercise, new research has shown that spending hours in front of a games console can have a positive impact. Playing action-based video games like Mario Kart could actually improve real-life skills like driving, according to the study. Playing violent video games and watching violence on television can lead to more aggressive behaviour in children, according to a new report. Angry feelings can also affect children of all ages subjected to screen violence, both real and fictional.

BehavioSec brings machine learning security to your fingertips

#artificialintelligence

Security isn't an add-on; in today's world security precludes business. Neil Costigan is the CEO of BehavioSec, a behavioural biometrics company using continuous machine learning to authenticate users based on the way they type, swipe, and hold their devices. To illustrate the imperative call for security and the ingenuity of attackers, Costigan recounted a cautionary tale about a trading platform in Asia which sacrificed security at the client side to make way for user convenience. Creators felt that if they made it impossible to withdraw money from the app, instead requiring a manual step such as going into a physical branch where KYC and identity verification would be guaranteed, user data would never be compromised. However, fraudsters exploited the weak security and commandeered a number of accounts to make lots of small trades, eventually managing to manipulate the market by building consumer accounts that could then trade with the stolen profiles, - including hedges and quick buys - before enjoying the cash out.
