Kotak Bank starts Innovation Lab,open to investing in startups - Artificial Intelligence Online
Private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank has started an'Innovation Lab' in Bengaluru to tap into the best technology that impacts its operations, and is open to investing in startups, a senior company official has said. "We started an'Innovation Lab' recently which is right now a dedicated space from where we are partnering with startups in the fintech space to test concepts and launch them into commercial products," Kotak Bank's Chief Digital Officer Deepak Sharma told PTI. The fourth largest private sector bank has put together a seven-member core team, which is working with an equal number of startups in the artificial intelligence, analytics, biometric or iris scanning and machine learning space. A bulk of the startups are Bengaluru-based, while two are from the US and Australia, Sharma said. Domestic lenders, especially those in the private sector, have been increasing their engagement with the fledgling fintech startup community to tap into the technologies of the future which will help them stay relevant.
IBM's Watson AI saved a woman from leukemia
IBM's Watson has done everything from winning at Jeopardy to cooking exotic meals, but it appears to have accomplished its greatest feat yet: saving a life. University of Tokyo doctors report that the artificial intelligence diagnosed a 60-year-old woman's rare form of leukemia that had been incorrectly identified months earlier. The analytical machine took just 10 minutes to compare the patient's genetic changes with a database of 20 million cancer research papers, delivering an accurate diagnosis and leading to proper treatment that had proven elusive. Watson has also identified another rare form of leukemia in another patient, the university says.
Machine Learning, etc: Computationally nice structures
One approach to solving hard problems is to break them into computationally efficient parts. For instance, Globerson/Jaakkola do approximate counting by decomposing graph into planar graphs. In each part, the problem reduces to perfect matchings which can be solved efficiently on planar graph. Sontag/Jaakola solve subproblems on star-shaped subgraphs of original graph, the symmetry of star graph enabling a very fast solution to each subproblem. I recently came across graph class database which gives information on thousands of graph classes.

For sixth time, SpaceX rocket lands Falcon 9 rocket
The private spaceflight company landed its Falcon 9 rocket for the sixth time in the last eight months early Sunday morning (Aug. The two-stage Falcon 9 lifted off from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 1:26 a.m. EDT (0526 GMT) Sunday, carrying JCSAT-16 toward a distant geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO). Less than 9 minutes later, the rocket's first stage came back for a pinpoint landing on the deck of a robotic ship called Of Course I Still Love You, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles off the Florida coast. A textbook touchdown had been anything but guaranteed. "Given this mission's GTO destination, the first stage will be subject to extreme velocities and re-entry heating, making a successful landing challenging," SpaceX representatives wrote in a pre-launch JCSAT-16 press kit.
