The House Oversight Committee released an email exchange Wednesday between Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and former Secretary of State Colin Powell in which he advised her on the use of personal email. The exchange between Clinton and Powell took place two days before the start of her tenure as secretary of state. According to The Wall Street Journal, Powell told Clinton that he used a personal computer to conduct government business and took steps to ensure his digital correspondence wasn't "going through the State Department servers." Powell said he had "a personal computer that was hooked up to a private phone line ... so I could communicate with a wide range of friends directly without it going through the State Department servers. I even used it to do business with some foreign leaders and some of the senior folks in the Department on their personal email accounts."

In the last couple of years, we have examined how deep learning shops are thinking about hardware. From GPU acceleration, to CPU-only approaches, and of course, FPGAs, custom ASICs, and other devices, there are a range of options--but these are still early days. The algorithmic platforms for deep learning are still evolving and it is incumbent on hardware to keep up. Accordingly, we have been seeing more benchmarking efforts of various approaches from the research community. This week yielded a new benchmark effort comparing various deep learning frameworks on a short list of CPU and GPU options.

When Apple unveils its new iPhone Wednesday, it's expected to push hard on software improvements available for its next mobile operating system, iOS 10, available for current iPhones and a predicted new iPhone model. The iPhone's voice-activated digital assistant Siri will be a key part of this upgrade, say tech analysts and developers. Siri, primarily used for voice commands to dial phone numbers, set reminders and get traffic information, has been opened to third-party developers after five years of existence. Apple, via a spokeswoman, said app developers are creating "completely new ways for users to interact" within apps.

Austin startup CognitiveScale has raised 21.8 million to ramp up sales and marketing of its artificial intelligence technology. The company, founded by members of the IBM Watson team, received the funding from Norwest Venture Partners and Intel Capital. It has raised a total of 32 million since inception. CognitiveScale has created a cloud platform that can mine huge databases and use natural language to present data in an easy to understand format. The platform can be plugged into a company's website and extracts insights from the company's existing data.
