Strategic Technology: IBM Acquire Promontory – Levelling Up in the AI & Data Game – Charting Stacks
Last week IBM announced they had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire strategic consultancy Promontory Financial Group. Promontory is not exactly a household name, but they are one of the very top tier of global banking consultancies, with a particular focus on regulation and compliance. IBM cite a McKinsey figure of 270 Billion costs related to compliance, which consists of direct compliance spend of 99 Billion, with the remainder accounted for with other forms of compliance leakage (fines, damage to goodwill etc.). For clarity we must state that there is no public data available for this figure, but it seems in-line with other research that is available. In many ways the figures are somewhat irrelevant, if we look at, for example, the destruction to shareholder value that can occur when a financial institution is not in compliance with relevant rules and regulations.

The only other active moving part of the robot is the body itself. The spherical induction motor (SIM) invented by Hollis, a research professor in Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute, and Masaaki Kumagai, a professor of engineering at Tohoku Gakuin University in Tagajo, Japan, eliminates the mechanical drive systems that each used on previous ballbots. Because of this extreme mechanical simplicity, SIMbot requires less routine maintenance and is less likely to suffer mechanical failures. The new motor can move the ball in any direction using only electronic controls. These movements keep SIMbot's body balanced atop the ball.

Sharp's singing vacuum aims to tug users' heart strings
The Sharp Corp. robot vacuum cleaner on display at the ongoing CEATEC trade show is no mere machine. Dubbed Cocorobo, it collaborates with a singing voice synthesizer software called Vocaloid and can hold simple conversations and even sing to people. The Osaka-based firm has been gearing up efforts to make home electronics that can connect to the internet and use artificial intelligence to strengthen the bond with people. But while the appliance seems to work well, its marketing may have gone a little haywire. Sharp says the idea is that a Vocaloid anime character named Cocorobo lives inside the cleaner.
Adapteva's 1,024-core Epiphany V mega-chip packs a serious wallop
Back in 2010, an Intel researcher said 1,000-core processors would be feasible. We're in that era, and the race to make chips faster and more power efficient is gaining steam. The latest mega-chip is a 1,024-core processor called Epiphany V, which was announced by Adapteva on Wednesday. Adapteva claims it will have enough juice to outperform some of the latest gaming and server processors. It has a mere 24 more cores than the 1,000-core KiloCore, a test chip made by researchers at University of California, Davis.

The United Nation's Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), which last week chose to ban all commercial trade of pangolins, will come to a close today. The pangolin, also known as the scaly anteater, has been poached to near extinction. Wildlife conservationists hope the ban will help restore the species, which is harvested for meat and scales. But others say trade sanctions aren't enough – that a coordinated effort between governments, businesses, conservationists, and communities will be necessary to save this maligned mammal. "Hopefully this will be followed by increased resources and attention being devoted to saving this well armored – but utterly defensive – and wholly unique species," Jeff Flocken, North American regional director at the International Fund for Animal Welfare, told Reuters.
