T-Mobile seen as top target following AT&T-Time Warner deal

NEW YORK T-Mobile US Inc is the likeliest acquisition target as media companies seek a wireless partner following AT&T Inc's proposed 85.4 billion takeover of Time Warner Inc, analysts said. AT&T announced the deal late on Saturday, stoking urgency in the telecoms and media sectors, where carriers facing a saturated wireless market are looking for content to attract mobile users and producers of shows and movies are seeking digital distribution. T-Mobile took most of the wireless industry's subscriber and revenue growth in the third quarter. Its strong balance sheet and fast-growing wireless business makes it an attractive target for a pay-TV or media company, analysts said.

Agriculture Drones Are Finally Cleared for Takeoff

Tech-savvy farmers have been some of the earliest commercial adopters of drone technology, purchasing 45,000 drones last year alone. But if they were using the drones to check on the condition of their fields, spraying their crops, or keeping tabs on livestock, most of them were technically breaking the law. New U.S. federal rules that went into effect this summer, however, should make it easier for farmers to get a drone's-eye view of their fields. The new rules allow commercial drone operators to get certified via a written test, so long as they fly drones that meet certain weight and altitude guidelines. Before this, operators had to pay for a pilot's license and get a special exemption to use a drone, a slow and cumbersome process.

Paxata raises 33.5 million to further develop machine learning for information management

Paxata today announced it has raised 33.5 million to bolster the machine learning and semantic analysis foundations of its enterprise information platform. Led by Intel Capital, today's investment is Paxata's fourth funding round and brings its total capital raised to 61.5 million. Paxata's platform provides a self-service, visual approach for information management to large corporations. "We target the one billion people in the enterprise who know how to use Microsoft Excel and want to use data to make business decisions," said Nenshad Bardoliwalla, cofounder and chief product officer of Paxata, at the Intel Capital Global Summit. According to Bardoliwalla, Paxata helps those who need fast access to meaningful data without having to write code or learn to use Hadoop. Called AnswerSets, the company's product connects big data analytics to the operational applications used by business analysts, chief data officers, and IT managers.

Uber's self-driving truck makes its first commercial delivery: beer

The first commercial shipment by a self-driving truck was a beer run. Uber Technologies Inc.'s self-driving trucking unit, Otto, said Tuesday it partnered with brewing giant Anheuser-Busch Cos. to carry 51,744 cans of Budweiser on a shipment through Colorado. "Yes, you can go out right now and buy a can of beer that was shipped by a self-driving truck," Otto said. With "full support from the state of Colorado," Otto said, the white-and-red truck traveled from Fort Collins down Interstate 25 to Colorado Springs last Thursday "exit-to-exit without any human intervention." "Our professional driver was out of the driver's seat for the entire 120-mile journey down I-25, monitoring the self-driving system from the sleeper berth in the back," Otto said.

Self-driving convoys were born from a simple military calculus: the fewer people driving vehicles in convoys, the fewer people will die when those convoys get attacked. In 2004, as the Iraq war entered its second year, DARPA offered 1 million to the team of robotics engineers who could make a machine cross 150 miles of the Mojave desert. No team succeeded in the first year, and the furthest only covered 7 miles of desert, but five teams completed the course in 2005. Since then, driverless vehicles have taken the civilian world by storm, with autopilot a key Tesla feature and companies like Uber and Alphabet investing in their own autonomous people-carrying machines. BT kills the phone box and announces new Wi-Fi and phone charging kiosks to go in their place

BT has announced that it will be replacing its famous and much-revered red boxes with new kiosks. Those kiosks won't allow people to hide in them, but will otherwise offer the modern version of phonebox technology – super fast Wi-Fi, free calls and chargers for phones, instead of traditional handsets. The new kiosks will start opening up on major high streets in London from next year. They'll eventually roll out to the rest of the country – though there'll be fewer of them than there are traditional phone boxes. Nissan hiring 300 to develop common connected car technology

YOKOHAMA – The top executive overseeing connected vehicles at Nissan and Renault believes the benefits of developing a common technology for connectivity within the Japanese and French auto partnership outweigh the risks of sustaining huge damage from a possible defect or cyberattack. Ogi Redzic, senior vice president at the Renault-Nissan Alliance, oversees such connected services, including staying connected with family, navigating best routes and remote control of vehicles -- an area where all the world's automakers are trying to gain an edge. Redzic, formerly of Motorola and Nokia, was tapped for the post at the alliance earlier this year. He told reporters Tuesday at Nissan's Yokohama headquarters that the alliance has begun hiring 300 people to build such software applications for future cars, in addition to 300 employees at Nissan Motor Co. and 300 at Renault SA already working on the effort. Nissan-Renault hopes to lead in connected vehicles, in addition to green cars and self-driving cars, the two other increasingly vital auto technologies.
