Samsung to launch AI assistant service for Galaxy S8

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Sunday it would launch an artificial intelligence digital assistant service for its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone, seeking to rebound from the Galaxy Note 7's collapse and differentiate its devices. The world's top smartphone maker in October announced the acquisition of Viv Labs Inc, a firm run by a co-creator of Apple Inc's Siri voice assistant program. Samsung plans to integrate the San Jose-based company's AI platform, called Viv, into the Galaxy smartphones and expand voice-assistant services to home appliances and wearable technology devices. Samsung is counting on the Galaxy S8 to help revive smartphone momentum after the discontinuation of fire-prone Galaxy Note 7s, which will hit its profit by $5.4 billion over three quarters through the first quarter of 2017. Investors and analysts say the Galaxy S8 must be a strong device in order for Samsung to win back customers and revive earnings momentum.


Joint Multimodal Learning with Deep Generative Models

We investigate deep generative models that can exchange multiple modalities bi-directionally, e.g., generating images from corresponding texts and vice versa. Recently, some studies handle multiple modalities on deep generative models, such as variational autoencoders (VAEs). However, these models typically assume that modalities are forced to have a conditioned relation, i.e., we can only generate modalities in one direction. To achieve our objective, we should extract a joint representation that captures high-level concepts among all modalities and through which we can exchange them bi-directionally. As described herein, we propose a joint multimodal variational autoencoder (JMVAE), in which all modalities are independently conditioned on joint representation. In other words, it models a joint distribution of modalities. Furthermore, to be able to generate missing modalities from the remaining modalities properly, we develop an additional method, JMVAE-kl, that is trained by reducing the divergence between JMVAE's encoder and prepared networks of respective modalities. Our experiments show that our proposed method can obtain appropriate joint representation from multiple modalities and that it can generate and reconstruct them more properly than conventional VAEs. We further demonstrate that JMVAE can generate multiple modalities bi-directionally.

At the Trend Micro Insight 2016 event for industry analysts, the 27-year-old pure play security vendor displayed a modern enterprise security portfolio updated with new machine learning capabilities and fresh threat intelligence. The combination of Trend Micro's refreshed portfolio, ample resources and fortunate timing due to disruptions challenging some of its key competitors position Trend Micro to accelerate its revenue growth in 2017. According to TBR's estimates, the vendor's year-to-year enterprise (nonconsumer) security revenue growth has often lagged the market average, ranging from -6 percent to 5 percent (not including the inorganic increase it earned from its 1Q16 acquisition of TippingPoint) over the past two years. TBR expects Trend Micro to achieve high-single-digit growth in 2017 based on its current initiatives. These initiatives include promoting its new machine learning-based threat detection capabilities on servers and endpoints, expanding its cloud service provider partnerships to extend its Deep Security solution to more platforms, and leveraging TippingPoint to increase its customer base in the Americas.

Japan's war against medical marijuana

Former actress Saya Takagi was arrested in Okinawa on Oct. 25 for possession of marijuana, three months after she unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Upper House election on a platform to legalize pot for medical purposes. She insists the contraband was not hers. Though Takagi, whose real name is Ikue Masudo, is retired from showbiz, reruns of dramas she appeared in are still shown on TV. When a celebrity is involved in a scandal, broadcasters scour their lineups for any ties to the disgraced person. TV Asahi quickly scrubbed from its afternoon schedule old episodes of the popular detective series "Aibo" that featured Takagi.


Investing in Artificial Intelligence

Sure, I can make the case for how companies like Lockheed and Monsanto will rely on A.I. in the coming years. I already invest in Amazon. I'd want a company AT LEAST AS compelling an investment as Amazon… tough to come across. An analysis of Facebook and Alphabet's Google by research firm Innography shows a surge in AI patent filings that began in 2010. Alphabet currently has more than 3,000 AI patents that are active or pending government approval.


Artificial Intelligence and the Anatomy of The (Healthy) Future

If I had to pick one area I find most exciting, most potentially disruptive and thus the best opportunity for return on investment, it would be A.I. Or is it the other way around? The anatomy of infrastructure is not unlike that of the human body, and we all know it's possible to live long, healthy lives. But we also know that systems out of balance in the body lead to sickness and disease (or, in the case of Industrial Revolution, economic disease and monetary sickness). It hasn't happened yet, as history has shown that human behavior, fear, and greed are more sure in life than death and taxes. Remember, we're trying to construct an infrastructure with systems working in harmony: the Anatomy of the (Healthy) Future Clearly, the best representation of the nervous system in our cyber-anatomy infrastructure is Artificial Intelligence, the future of which is Deep Learning (Augmented Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Neural Networks have actually been around some time).

As the nation ponders the US election's outcome and the implications of its result, a city of the future is being built in Singapore -- a place where a far more restrictive political system has enabled the creation of the most technologically advanced metropolis on the planet. The question remains, however, whether the loss of privacy and the opportunity for governmental abuse is worth a more efficient municipal power grid and public transport system.


How 3D Printing and IBM Watson Could Replace Doctors

Health care executives from IBM Watson and Athenahealth athn debated that question onstage at Fortune's inaugural Brainstorm Health conference Tuesday. In addition to partnering with Celgene celg to better track negative drug side effects, IBM ibm is applying its cognitive computing AI technology to recommend cancer treatment in rural areas in the U.S., India, and China, where there is a dearth of oncologists, said Deborah DiSanzo, general manager for IBM Watson Health. For example, IBM Watson could read a patient's electronic medical record, analyze imagery of the cancer, and even look at gene sequencing of the tumor to figure out the optimal treatment plan for a particular person, she said. "That is the promise of AI--not that we are going to replace people, not that we're going to replace doctors, but that we really augment the intelligence and help," DiSanzo said. Athenahealth CEO Jonathan Bush, however, disagreed.
