As the director of the Artificial Intelligence and Vision labs at Stanford University, she oversaw the creation of ImageNet, a vast database of images designed to accelerate the development of AI that can "see." And, well, it worked, helping to drive the creation of deep learning systems that can recognize objects, animals, people, and even entire scenes in photos--technology that has become commonplace on the world's biggest photo-sharing sites. Now, Fei-Fei is leaving Stanford to help run a brand new AI group inside Google, a move that reflects just how aggressively the world's biggest tech companies are remaking themselves around this breed of artificial intelligence. Alongside another for Stanford researcher--Jia Li, who more recently ran research for the social networking service Snapchat--the China-born Fei-Fei will lead a team inside Google's cloud computing operation, building online services that any coder or company can use to build their own AI. This new Cloud Machine Learning Group is the latest example of AI not only re-shaping the technology that Google uses, but also changing how the company organizes and operates its business.

The Russian cosmonaut shows us what it's like to hang around the space station's observational dome, thanks to a new 360 degree, 4K video from Russia's RT News. He dryly mocks flat-Earth types, saying "you can see from here that the Earth is round -- no elephants or whales holding it up. The Cupola was built in 2010 to give astronauts and cosmonauts the best view to operate the Mobile Servicing System robotic arm (the Canadarm2). After winning the first of a three-game go match against DeepZenGo, a Japanese artificial intelligence system, master Cho Chikun lost the second. DeepZenGo, developed mainly by the University of Tokyo, Dwango Co. and the Nihon Ki-in, the main organization in Japan for the traditional board game, has become the first Japanese program to beat a professional go player without the benefit of a handicap. Oil and gas sector to get boost from AI system

Oil and gas exploration can get a boost from the efficient deployment of the artificially intelligent computer system, IBM Watson, a renowned data scientist has said. "Petroleum geology can be accelerated by training IBM Watson on historic data. Nearly every process currently driven by human expertise can be accelerated by its cognitive computing technology," Romeo Kienzler told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview. When asked how the cognitive technology that can think like a human can be used effectively in oil exploration in Qatar and the wider region instead of the conventional methods, IBM Watson's chief data scientist explained the system "can have a look at such vast amounts of structured and unstructured data in seconds which a human brain cannot process in an entire life time." In Qatar to take part in a recent event by Hamad Bin Khalifa University's Qatar Computer Research Institute, Kienzler pointed out that "whenever human expertise is involved in a process, the addition of a cognitive system as an adviser most likely will accelerate the process because information loss is prevented."

Salesforce has been working with Transport for NSW to help deliver improved customer services for 18 months, and Minister Constance addressed the Salesforce Government Speaker Series on Friday 4 November, just days after he unveiled the NSW Future Transport Technology Roadmap. The Roadmap brings the focus clearly to the customer – we're increasingly hearing and talking about the need for the public sector agencies to offer customer experiences on par with those of other businesses – and Minister Constance spoke of three key objectives: Developing and connecting real-time digital information, navigation, payment and engagement platforms so they are easier to understand and use, and can give personalised, individual service. Transforming mass-transit networks to improve efficiency and service frequency, and reduce transit times, making these services more attractive to our customers.
