The Vintage Computer Federation is the world's largest group of collectors and restorers of historic computing systems. Member activities include hands-on exhibitions conducted at all manner of tech-themed gatherings around the United States, in addition to the federation's own Vintage Computer Festival events. At the World Maker Faire in New York City, in October, two of our mid-Atlantic chapter members born in the 1970s decided to demonstrate computers and robotic kits from the 1980s, using programming languages developed in the 1960s. Charlie was built using the Capsela construction system. This system was first sold by the Mitsubishi Pencil Co. in Japan in 1975 and later licensed by toy manufacturers in other countries (and can now be found on eBay).

Mount Sinai researchers use computer algorithms to diagnose HCM from echos
Computer algorithms can automatically interpret echocardiographic images and distinguish between pathological hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and physiological changes in athletes' hearts, according to research from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), published online yesterday in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. HCM is a disease in which a portion of the myocardium enlarges, creating functional impairment of the heart. It is the leading cause of sudden death in young athletes. Diagnosing HCM is challenging since athletes can present with physiological hypertrophy, in which their hearts appear large, but do not feature the pathological abnormality of HCM. The current standard of care requires precise phenotyping of the two similar conditions by a highly trained cardiologist.

Spotify joins up with Headspace to help people practice mindfulness and meditation
Spotify is looking to make people better, as well as more entertained. The company has launched a new partnership with Headspace, an app meant to help people live "healthier and happier lives". In the new deal, people will be able to suscribe to both of the services for a reduced price. Together, the two apps will sell for ยฃ14.99 -- or roughly the same price in other currencies -- rather than the ยฃ10 or so that each of them costs. Deep Belief Nets in C and CUDA C: Volume 1: Restricted Boltzmann Machines and Supervised Feedforward Networks
Deep belief nets are one of the most exciting recent developments in artificial intelligence. The structure of these elegant models is much closer to that of human brains than traditional neural networks; they have a'thought process' that is capable of learning abstract concepts built from simpler primitives. A typical deep belief net can learn to recognize complex patterns by optimizing millions of parameters, yet this model can still be resistant to overfitting. This book presents the essential building blocks of the most common forms of deep belief nets. At each step the text provides intuitive motivation, a summary of the most important equations relevant to the topic, and concludes with highly commented code for threaded computation on modern CPUs as well as massive parallel processing on computers with CUDA-capable video display cards.
Carnegie Mellon colloquium explores artificial intelligence - The Tartan
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) and Carnegie Mellon University held the first part of the two-part joint Carnegie Colloquium on Digital Governance and Security in Washington D.C. on Oct. 31. The first part of the colloquium was titled "The Rise of Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Military Operations and Privacy," and the second part, titled "The Future of the Internet: Governance and Conflict," will be held this year in Pittsburgh on Dec. 2. CEIP is a series of foreign policy-based research centers located in Russia, China, Europe, the Middle East, India, and the United States, with headquarters in Washington D.C., that collects itself under the phrase, "The Global Think Tank." It was established in 1960 by Andrew Carnegie and, according to a report by the University of Pennsylvania, is the third most influential think tank in the world. The colloquium, held for the benefit of both Carnegie Mellon and the CEIP, aimed to allow for communication between the academics at Carnegie Mellon and the foreign policy and ethics experts from all the CEIP stations across the world to discuss the implication of artificial intelligence on foreign policy and the challenges posed by it. The second part of the colloquium will focus on cyber-security norms and internet governance. "Designing safe software systems and attempting to create the learning abilities of the human brain are natural progressions towards the two of the modern world's most pressing concerns -- cyber security and privacy," said President Subra Suresh, in the welcome address.
AI's the new buzzword in Vietnamese tech space. Will it take off?
Artificial intelligence (AI) can become a game changer for Vietnamese technology startups, say experts, as they are betting big on the potential to deploy chatbots and image recognition to deep learning in the country. "AI can be integrated into many verticals because the ultimate purpose of AI is to assist, or even to replace, human efforts in doing things in a more effective way," Nghiem Xuan Bach, project director at Cinnamon AI Lab, told DEALSTREETASIA. Consider some of the recent developments in this space: Cyberagent Ventures-backed healthcare app ViCare is applying AI technology, with a chatbot to solve users' queries. It is reportedly the first chatbot to be launched in Vietnam. Users interact with the bot through Facebook Messenger to ask for information about clinic facilities, doctor identity and remedies, as ViCare claims to have a database of over 21,000 healthcare facilities and 22,000 doctors across the country.
