App, Vehicle-to-Vehicle Network Seeks to Predict and Prevent Accidents

Eran Shir has an ambitious goal: Eliminate car crashes without waiting for the advent of autonomous vehicles. His company Nexar makes an app that turns smartphones into an "intelligent" dashcam that uses the phone's camera, accelerometer and gyroscope to collect information about what's happening on the road and to send it to the cloud for machine-learning analysis. Nexar now is crowdsourcing its data in San Francisco and New York to give drivers a real-time heads-up about dangers such as cars ahead suddenly stopping or swerving. "We are weaving everyone together to build a network of vehicles to track what's happening on the road, that can predict and prevent accidents," said Shir, co-founder and CEO of Tel Aviv's Nexar, which has offices in San Francisco and New York. For instance, "If you brake hard, all the cars behind you will be aware of that within 50 milliseconds."

Finding Alternate Features in Lasso

We propose a method for finding alternate features missing in the Lasso optimal solution. In ordinary Lasso problem, one global optimum is obtained and the resulting features are interpreted as task-relevant features. However, this can overlook possibly relevant features not selected by the Lasso. With the proposed method, we can provide not only the Lasso optimal solution but also possible alternate features to the Lasso solution. We show that such alternate features can be computed efficiently by avoiding redundant computations. We also demonstrate how the proposed method works in the 20 newsgroup data, which shows that reasonable features are found as alternate features.


Minority Report study uses AI to identify a criminal based on facial recognition

What if a computer could predict who's a criminal and who isn't just by scanning their face? It sounds like creepy science fiction from a film like Minority Report, but a pair of researchers in China have been busy testing that exact theory out. Xiaolin Wu and Xi Zhang from China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University published a study called " Automated Inference on Criminality using Face Images ." They fed the faces of 1,856 people (half of which were convicted violent criminals) into a computer and set about analysing them. The photos were all of Chinese men aged between 18 and 55, with no beards, scars or other distinguishing features.


Google Taps AMD For Accelerating Machine Learning In The Cloud

AMD is finally making its first moves into deep learning. Google will start equipping its sprawling data center infrastructure with AMD's graphics processing units (or GPUs) to accelerate deep learning applications, AMD announced on Tuesday at a supercomputing conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. GPUs, typically used for generating the latest in gaming graphics, have been booming in deep learning, which is a flavor of artificial intelligence where the computer teaches itself how to do certain tasks. GPUs have caught on because of their capabilities in "parallel computing," a technique that involves multiple calculations happening simultaneously. That makes GPUs much faster at running deep learning neural nets than more generalized processors.


Apple's deal with Indian ride-hailing firm Ola hints at bigger connected car ambitions

Apple may have scrapped its plans to build self-driving cars, but if its recent deal with Indian ride-hailing firm Ola is anything to go by, the tech giant's auto industry ambitions are far from over. Ola, India's largest ride-hailing company, announced Tuesday that it is partnering with Apple to offer Apple Music as part of the in-car experience. The firm, which also announced partnerships with Sony, Qualcomm and Audio Compass, said the service will be made available in some of its vehicles as part of a platform called Ola Play. When passengers book an Ola ride, they will be able to interact with an in-car tablet to control the vehicle's air conditioning, music, watch videos and even read ebooks. "Cars were initially built for the driver," Ola Chief Executive Bhavish Agarwal said during a news conference reported on by India media outlet YourStory.
