Smartwatches that track the health of patients and send out an alarm if they fall down, anti-loss alarm chip, and apps that convert mobile phones into a television remote were just some of the innovative technologies on display at BengaluruITE.Biz 2016, a flagship event of Karnataka government. Hundreds of startups and technology companies pitched their products and services to an audience of top business executives, government officials, and investors at the event held in Palace Grounds here. Industry stalwarts said they had come together on a single platform because information technology was changing significantly and they needed to equip themselves with future technologies to stay relevant. Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys, India's second-largest software exporter, said these significant changes are creating new opportunities such as autonomous vehicles and telemedicine. "We require new tools and techniques to create and manage new knowledge," said Mr. Gopalakrishnan.

Fedscoop: Autonomy and artificial intelligence may be integral to the Defense Department's Third Offset Strategy, but making those technologies useful will require IT investments to integrate them into defense systems, a new report says. "Both the DOD and the Intelligence Community, they are investing in these technologies. So artificial intelligence is a big priority area, machine learning, all these technologies," Matthew Hummer, director of analytics at big-data and analytics firm Govini, told FedScoop. "But they haven't really done a good job of integrating it into the current Distributed Common Ground Systems. And that's because those systems really need pretty much a big overhaul to be able to do that."

Humanoid robots who are all named Pepper, are greeting shoppers in two Westfield malls in California. They will be at the malls during the holiday season and might go well beyond that, according to Steve Carlin, the vice president and general manager for Softbank Robotics America. The friendly robots welcome the shoppers to the mall, dance with them, or play games with them like card matching. The Pepper robots can also take selfies and teach six languages to anyone who's interested, as well as conduct a customer service survey.
