In March 2014, a few months before the release of This War of Mine, the developers at 11 Bit Studios were discussing potential endings to their video game story of civilians trying to survive in a war-torn city. Wojciech Setlak, one of the writers, suggested they have a neighbouring country intervene, sending in troops to gain control of part of the weakened nation. A month later, in the real world, militia flying Russian flags – known to the locals as "little green men" – appeared in eastern Ukraine. "It was uncanny," says Setlak. "We had anticipated something that actually happened."

Xiaobing or Xiaoice, as Microsoft officially calls its chatbot, has become extremely popular since it was launched two years ago. Over 40 million users chat with Xiaoice on Chinese social media platforms WeChat and Weibo every day. For many lonely men across China, Microsoft's chatbot has become a virtual girlfriend, with a quarter of regular users expressing love for the artificial intelligence platform, reports CNN. Xiaoice can mimic real conversations, but if users desire to talk to her about President-elect Donald Trump, Tiananmen Square, the Communist Party, the Dalai Lama (Tibetan spiritual leader), or Chinese President Xi Jinping, they may be out of luck.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered a way to remove specific fears from the brain using a combination of artificial intelligence and brain scanning technology. Fear related disorders effect around 19 million US adults, or 8.7 percent of the adult population. Current treatments are limited to expensive and'unpleasant' forms such as aversion therapy, where individuals confront their fear by being exposed to it in the hope they will learn that the thing they fear isn't harmful after all. Now a team of neuroscientists from University of Cambridge, Japan and the USA, has found a way of unconsciously removing a fear memory from the brain. Using AI, the team developed a method to read and identify fear memory using'Decoded Neurofeedback'.

Indian engineers could be hurt in more ways than one by US president-elect Donald Trump's promise to bring back jobs for Americans. From the early days of his campaign, Trump's anti-immigrant stance has included plans to cut down on work visas, known as H-1B, that allow skilled foreign workers to work full-time in the US for at least six years. In March, the real estate mogul said, if elected, he would "end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labour program, and institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program." His attorney general pick, Senator Jeff Sessions, has long advocated clipping the program. If H-1B visa allocations are limited under a Trump presidency, it would be bad news for Indians who have been the recipients of the highest number (pdf) of such visas all these years.
